"'And listen, Gandalf, my old friend and helper!' he said,
coming near and speaking now in a softer voice. 'I said we, for we it can be, if you will join with me. A new Power is rising. Against it the old allies and dominions will not avail us at all. There is no hope left in Elves or dying Numenor. This then is one choice before you, before us. We may join with that Power. It would be wise,Gandalf. There is hope that way. Its victory is at hand; and there will be rich reward for those that aided it. As the Power grows, its (proved?) friends will also grow; and the Wise, such as you and I, may with patience come at last to direct its course, to control it. Speaker is correctly guessed as Gandalf (I was hoping to throw someone off just a little bit... did it work?)

for we it may be
old allies and positions We can bide our time, we can keep our thoughts in our hearts, deploring by the way, but (appointing) "o" in the wrong place?? it seems to be the only thing that makes sense

Both "positions" and "appointing" are incorrect and the placement of the letters is correct in the word beginning with "a".

Yes - often a word that we don't expect to cause much problem really throws people. Lots of times I think it's the vowels. When the remnants of a word are principally consonants - or even mixed - it's a lot easier. But when it's mostly vowels left, it's hard to fill in the right consonants at each place.

Yes, because instead of only having 5 or 8 choices, you have 24! Well, 23. Because there's no "u" I'm pretty sure you can rule out any "q"s. Keep trying! I'm sure you all know this word - as in you have heard it before and know what it means. It's not an unknown like one of those Elvish words or one of those outdated words...

Yes, I know. I've been unmotivated and resorted to avoidance. Well, here goes:

I am spring-boarding completely off Beren3000's post:
"False hopes are more dangerous than fears, and they will not help us farm this winter. I wasted my time, though the hours seemed pressing. But all such things are short-lived; and the _o_ in the aging is their only true end, I guess. And now I might as well give you back your gift."
