Can I ask again, I only got three responses. One from someone who obviously knows what I look like.

There are so many new people on Entmoot that I'm begginning to blank out...I can't think what people might look like.

And by the way, I agree with Lizra...

Yes, the dire tongue of 'chat-speak' is most annoying!

Yes, chat-speak can be most annoying ... I know that I sometimes still use it

I know that I do slip into typing with my own accent quite regularly, that's a slip-back from my old chatroom days where a bunch of use all typed in our accents....made it easier to recognise each other in a crowded room.

If ya wanna use chat-speak you should really use it propers, like so-

Having never "chatted", I am totally clueless here. (I guess that's more than obvious! )
You mean you all typed in your "funny" English accents? What a trip!

I never try and spell any thing wrong, I am just such a terrible speller that it just happens naturally. I normaly look up the words that I can't spell in my online dictonary (see sig below). And thanks again for the link to the online dictionary link Crickhollow!

I don't think anyone really tries to spell words incorrectly (unless they do so in jest), but to deliberately use "chat-speak" all the time becomes tiresome.

And just to show that I can actually stay on topic - how do I envision the 'mooters?:

Fangirls - all seem to fade into 1 blurry vision of screaming teenagers, resembling the mobs that were "Beatle Mania"
Lizra - very pretty & pensive with a quirky sense of humour and loves nature
Coney - drunken rabbit ('nuf said)

and I'm unable to go on 'cos I seem to be typing very slowly and it is infuriating me, if I muster the energy I shall post the rest later

Edit - added pretty with Lizra's description ('cos I thought that anyway and was horrified to find that I had omitted it - my humblest apologies Liz)

welcome to the 21st century

I used to be annoyed by chat speak as well then I got used to it. Now I barely even notice it. Its just a slang short cut language developed by teens to chat online while minimizing finger use. I dont really see the harm in it. Once you become "fluent" you dont even notice it. And yet you can respond in "normal" english to it and both parties understand each other. I have even seen chat speak in other languages. Its really part of the lanscape now. No sense trying to resist it. Resistance if futile after all. You will be assimilated. Or you will die by the side of the road and join us dinosaurs. In my book anything that bridges communication is a good thing. k? c-ya.

How do I envision the 'mooters?

I have no idea....I've seen a piccy of a lot of you on the relavant (or sometimes not-so-relevant) threads but I very rarely read the profiles or anything.

Next person who comes along I'll try to guess 'em.

Guess I'm just old school. It comes across as laziness to me. I think the quality of the post suffers when poor language is used. Maybe Entmoot is becoming too childish for me!

Well I think its much better here then in a lot of places. Poke your nose into some of the AOL chat rooms and this place will look like the Harvard english department in comparison. Fear not the new day my lady. As a self described regular and quality poster you still hold influence over the young here who for the most part seem eager to follow the rules and the examples of the most experienced. so using proper speech in combat to their new speech would be a much better alternative then bailing out altogether and writing it all off to a new generation you dont understand. tilt at windmills I say. and let them figure out what thats a reference to.

I spend most of my free time at work reading posts on an email list inhabited mainly by professors, authors and doctorate holders. The only time I have ever seen shorthand used there was by some kid who thought he could take on the big guys (but got his ass nailed to the wall instead). At a place like that, shorthand is seriously frowned upon. As are emoticons.

So now you know why I don't use smilies that often. Nevermind about me holding the record for most smilies in one post...

Our smilie here is very nice! I post on several forums, and "chat talk" is always frowned on.
