Well Radagast, it looks like you are the only one bold enough to venture a guess on the science riddle so far. I realize that it is rather cryptic. Here is a clue for you to ponder...
One of the elements is Elvish. Also, as another clue, I could have been more specific and called it a "Biology Riddle". Here is a reposting for your convenience: Middle Earth Science Riddle What became pure by combining three elements which over time became diluted until re-purified by recombining three similar elements? That one is a stumper.
Btw, Happy Birthday Kieth, in case you missed my post in the "birthday" thread.

As for the riddle, I had been thinking that I was making them too easy. Now I fear that I have made one that is too hard. Oh well, maybe it will stimulate a few brains out there. Another clue: One of the elements is "Human". Last edited by Keith K : 10-28-2003 at 12:41 AM. |

Keith,
That IS a noggin-scratcher... With your last two clues (even from the first of them) I'm inclined to think along the lines of those good ole geneaological tables... like how Earendil was the product of Human, Elf & Maia ancestors. BUT, I don't think we ever had new Maia blood introduced into the family lines. Also... I don't really see this leading to anything that was really "pure"... ??? This isn't any final answer to your riddle of course, but is it on the right track? Warmer...? Colder...?? Last edited by Valandil : 10-28-2003 at 04:08 PM. |

Valandil, you are thinking along the correct lines. In fact, you are right on the edge of figuring it out. The final element in this equation is Maian.

So the first three elements will be the Elven, Maia and Men-blood that entered in the strain of Kings of Númenor through Elros, and the blood was made 'pure' again through Aragorn's marriage with Arwen? But Arwen and Aragorn are only two parts, where is the third element?

Still, you have found the answer which is Numenorian Blood. The third element is present through Arwen who has Maian blood. Note that I said similar elements. Anyway, Congratulations are in order for getting the answer and honorable mention to Valandil who started sniffing it out earlier! It was a tough one and all y'all who participated deserve a round of applause! |

And actually, Aragorn had just a smidge of Maia blood in him as well. He and Arwen were cousins on her father's side, after all... I'd guess first cousins, like 64 times removed. Surely qualifies as "kissin' cousins"
Their son, Eldarion, is related to just about EVERYBODY in all these stories! Heck, even Firod Felagund was his great-great-uncle!! |

Of course! *smacks herself* Why didn't I think of it? I was thinking of Arwen and Aragorn as Elf and Men, forgetting that they already had a streak of Maia in them.
That was a nice, tough riddle, Keith!

Here's a new riddle for y'all. Try to figure out who got "gone".
Bad News For The Home Team Everything was looking great. Our troops arriving at high rates. Battles on the borders won. We had the enemy on the run. But rumors’ poison filled my head. I began to doubt with growing dread. Were the battles going well? And is it true our captain fell? Has the enemy breached our land? And can it be our doom’s at hand? I searched for enemies in the valley When I was sprung on by my ally. Everything is going wrong, I’m getting out you can call me gone! |

Hmmm... I'm not as familiar with details of Silmarillion, so I don't recall if a "captain" fell there:
Is it Turgon and the forces of Gondolin, at the first battle they turned out for - when some of the human forces switched to Morgoth's side in the battle? Or could it be survivors of Gondolin's fall...??? Am I allowed two guesses on an answer? |

Ya... my first thought was really Sauron's troops either at Pelennor... or in front of the Black Gate. Don't recall allies turning on them though, or anyone being "gone"...???
Unless... (here I need a Smily w/ a light bulb over his head) maybe it's the rest of the Ringwraiths!! Hey Keith, is it the other 8??? |

Sister Golden Hair is right, it is a LOTR riddle. That pretty much rules out Valandils' guess of Turgon. (although watch out for appendix sourced riddles!) He was much closer with his second guess. Here's a clue: the person I am thinking of is not a named character. That should help!

Oh - Earniel put me "on the right track" (maybe)
The little orc archer / scout who shot the bigger orc when they had ALMOST gotten to where Frodo and Sam were hiding?? Otherwise... I'll have to start checking the appendix! |
