Heh, nope. G.ray W.olf is not a science. Global Warming is though.

Though we do have a thread somewhere around here dedicated to the later, we don't have one dedicated to the former. Which, I think, could be a lot more fun.

Thanks, Sane, I was beginning to wonder if there was a thread somewhere devoted to the discussing of me and thrilling life.

Global warming...a subject that's attracted more politics than it has research to find out 1. what level the threat is (I think that the threat is at least moderate and will increase over time, but given my lack of access to all the data, it's difficult to tell and anything I say will be based merely on theory and little basis in solid facts), 2. what we're dealing with and 3. how to kill it. The last two questions should usually be asked for any threat of this magnitude.

Likelihood of major extinction...not likely at least within the next 100 years...unless something else happens to change this (ozone layer attacked by gamma ray burst, turning the sea to the consistency of battery acid, or an asteroid, or a major all-out war; even small-scale tactical nuclear weapons, enmasse, may devastate the atmosphere and ground water resources).

Quote:
And I would withdraw governmental support right now from idiots in wetlands and floodplains. Maybe they won't be underwater in 20 years from global warming. But there are plenty of reasons not to have oceanfront property in hurricane areas, and if they want to ignore those reasons they should do so entirely at their own risk.
But talk about living to the extreme - residing at oceanfront property is the ultimate example of it. During a hurricane, or practically any other manifestation of the devices of nature, it doesn't matter how much you work out because it's not THAT the wind is blowing...it's WHAT the wind is blowing.

I have never doubted the existence of G.rey W.olf.

Now G.lobal W.arming is a different matter altogether, though I will admit that both GW(the first op cit) and GW (the second intra) are materially derived from star dust - though not in the same manner of being or existence.

Hey Nautipus, I take it you've been following the autopsy on the mesonychotheutis?

I saw this on the news yesterday and I immediately had to think of Nauti.

Do you think they'll find something unusual, Nauti?

Mari-Probably not. From what I can tell they are getting some interesting insights into deepwater large squid. But, IIRC, they havnt found one with food in its stomach, so no help there. But they are learning alot more about the eyes and the weaponry it uses to capture prey.

Inked- Still Collossal squid.

Nautipus, help us out for a moment. My dad and I have a discussion pertaining the colossal squid. This disk-like...bit of the squid, it's on his head, right? My dad says the disk is more of a tail, since the actual head (eyes and beak) is closer to the tentacles, I'm saying, no it's still his head, all there is on a squid is head and tentactle. I figured you would know the right terminology.

Okay, I'm assuming the "disk" you're referring to is the top-most portion on this picture, if so, then those are fins used for locomotion and steering of the animal, and are extensions of the mantle which ends just above the actual head. The head is the small portion between the arms and mantle, and basically (externally) just carries the eyes. The siphon is also visible in this pic, jutting out beneath the mantle. Then there are the eight arms and two tentacles. The "disk" is really part of a covering that covers the visceral mass of the squid, and is much like our own torso, in function.

Hope that helps.

Ah damn you now I have to run along, find a moment where speaking of squids is appropriate and divulge all of this information! It's a compulsion...

Darn, I always thought the mantle was the part between the arms, where the mouth is.

That's actually called the buccal mass, which holds the beack. The beak is actually very unique, because it has varying degrees of hardness, so that when the squid bites, it foesnt harm itself. Very interesting to look at.

Coffeehouse- You go do that. It's a great compulsion.

Colossal calamari or Giant calamari?

Perhaps Nautipus can clarify the difference?
