Well, my bird name is Lily, and Lily is a joke inbatween me and some friends about me being a hobbit, so I geuss that counts! Besides, There's a Lily Baggins on one of the Hobbit family trees.

Also, in a school writing project I thought about doing Elanor, after Sam's first dauter, but since it's in the fucher in 2037, and I'm going to a Hobbit 100 years celebration, I don't want it to be to obviose!

I don't have any children, but I had a cat named Gandalf. He was a solid steel-grey color and very laid-back and mellow.

I don't know that I'd name a child after a fictional character, especially if the name were too unusual. It's rather difficult going through life with even a moderately unusual name (like I have). I can't imagine what it would be like for a child to have to live with a name like Aragorn or Galadriel.

I might name a cat Gimli someday, however....

I once heard a theory that it's easier on a girl to have an unusual name than on a boy. It's based on the typical reactions at young ages. If a boy has an unusual name, other little boys seem to more often react with: "Ooo... that's a WEIRD name!" and start making fun of it. If a girl has an unusual name, other little girls seem to more often react with: "Ooo... that's an interesting name! Very interesting."

In other words, it may be more risky to name your son: Aragorn, Legolas, Frodo, Gimli, Gandalf or Elrond... but less risky to name your daughter: Arwen, Galadriel, Eowyn, Artanis, Lalaith, Nienor, Firiel, etc.

What do you think of that notion?

Being a girl with a fairly unusual name, that's not true.

I was teased relentlessly come junior high because of my name.

edit: Then again, it was often by boys, and it continued into high school. I had a really bad time of it in junior high, so maybe it's a "special case" thing.

When kids want to tease they'll find anything. In my case they even found a way to make fun of the fairly common name Sarah. Drat that desert....

I think it will largely depend on what crowd you fall in with. Some girls may find it an interesting name, others will find any way imaginable to make you hate it.

I notice now adays everyone seems to be naming their kids more uncommon names. It's either totally uncommon or a plain jane name. Like so and so Jr. etc. My son is named after a character and a celeb. - Tristen, and my daughter is named after a combo of me and my husband, Kylie Anne. I have lots of family and friends thatnamed their kids really uncommon names. Come to think about it I don't know to spell any of them because they are that uncommon.

Needless to say I didn't see why a desert was supposed to make me feel bad. I thought it showed lack of imagination....

I think Arwen is a name that can be used as a name in our modern society, it's not too fantastic or outlandish. In opposition to Galadriel for instance.

On another messageboard I knew a guy whose real name was Isen, I thought that was a good, not too obvious, Tolkien-name.

Teehee... sorry about that... but after thinking about it long enough, I just couldn't resist.

Anyway - you seem much more like an "oasis" than a "desert"!

If a parent should want to name a child after a character in Tolkien, he or she should take into consideration how easy it will be for others to spell or pronounce. Arwen is good, as is Isen. But something like Elanor, while a very nice name, will have to be spelled and re-spelled by the child for the rest of her life because no one will get it right the first time.

My first and middle names are French. My first name is un-spellable and un-pronouncable by most Americans. If I pronounce it correctly, no one can spell it. If I spell it, they look at me as if I had just landed from Mars. I have learned to give a diminutive of my middle name at restaurants and fast food places because it isn't worth it having some poor kid look at me like I'm an alien.

Ah, the benefits of not having a middle name...

But you have a good point on Elanor-Eleanor or other variants. I hadn't considered that angle yet.

Still, I won't go into how many times I've seen my simple first name mutulated. Some people do the most cruel things to that poor 'h'.

I have a second-cousin who is "Sara." I can imagine what you're going through.

As for my own situation, I really hate having to assume an alias each time I order pizza.

which is one of the reasons i'll stick to naming pets after tolkien charcters (i had a goldfish named goldberry a while ago ) i'd hate to hear those names murdered like only john q. public could murder them

Same here. I'll probably end up naming my pets after Tolkien's characters than my children (which I may not even have, anyway). I understand the slaughtering of names. My first name is unusual, as is my last name, AND the way we spell the nickname that I actually go by is fairly unconventional. Arg. I have seen so many misspellings it's just sad.
