I don't really like cooked fish either; except for blue marlin. It's usually the thorny bones that discourage me.

I'm so upset. My son stayed with my parents last month (he was 3 at the time) while my husband and I went house hunting. My husband and I have agreed that as a compromise (since I'm a vegetarian and he's not) that our kids will eat poultry and fish, but not red meat (beef, pork, etc.). Well, my son just told me that my mother (who is not a vegetarian) took him to a fast food restaurant and gave him a burger! She knows I don't let him have red meat, and my husband supports this because he knows red meat is unhealthy. We aren't overly upset about the fact that he had red meat, but are very upset that while in her care she purposely went against our wishes. I don't think we'll be letting him stay with her again until he's older.

When he's older, shouldn't he be deciding for himself what he wants to eat?

Yes, that's really our plan. He can decide whether he wants to eat red meat, or become a full blown vegetarian, or whatever. But right now he's too young to understand. When he gets older we can explain why we don't eat red meat, and why I don't eat meat at all.
It just irks me that she did that behind our backs!

Chickens are treated a lot more cruelly than cows and sheep are.

True, as are consumers. Those birds are force-grown with a diet based on hormones and antibiotics, and it goes right into the consumer’s metabolism.

They certainly are

......... my uncle owns a smallholding and he occasionally *ahem* liberates, with the help of an employee, a dozen chickens from the battery farm (whenever he has lost a few to stray cats, the odd fox etc). Honestly if you saw these featherless, skinny chickens with there non-existant claws and beaks cut down to a stub you'd never eat non-freerange eggs or chicken meat again

Beside freerange eggs taste so much better than battery rubbish

I'll say one thing for chickens tho', they have remarkable recuperative abilities........just a couple of weeks of good corn and scraping for worms etc and they are as good as new, except for the beaks of course.
