Well, Gaffer, perchance those were Exeter twats with strong socialist leanings who ran the Empire?!

Sun-star, kindly discontinue the headbanging! It alarms the neighbors and may place sober, reliable celebrants of the end-of-term at precarious identity with wallbangers, bridgebangers, and other reputable bangers in Britiain!

The View from the Tater Patch

Since Hector asked, I bump this thread.

Since Labour won the General Election last year, two of the three party leaders have quit and Bliar has announced that he will step down before the next Election.

So, Britain will almost certainly have a change of Prime Minister, but it will be chosen by the membership of the Labour Party rather than the electorate. And it is almost certain to be Gordon Brown. The only real question is when Bliar will choose to go.

The Tories have a smarmy git of a new leader called David Cameron, a Nice Young Man who is doing rather well at being photogenic without actually saying anything substantive. However, he has got Labour in a bit of a lather as he might swing the gusset vote back to the Tories.

However, Bliar got him right between the eyes at a recent Prime Minister's Questions. Noting how, in the space of one week, Cameron had described himself as a "True Blue Conservative" to the Daily Telegraph, a "Liberal Tory" to voters in the Dunfermline East constituency, and one other completely different thing which I can't remember, Bliar commented:

"No wonder he's opposed to identity cards: he hasn't got one!"

I wanted to bump this thread just for that Tolkien-related tidbit:

Quote:
"Arthur we've always liked as a name and Samantha found Elwen in a book. We thought it was a good name," he said.

Tolkien connection?

Elwen is a name apparently of English origin which means "elf-wise friend".

Newspaper reports have previously suggested that Mr Cameron's supporters play a game in which they imagine themselves in a political version of Middle Earth, with their leader cast as the Tory version of Lord of the Rings' Frodo.

But a Tory spokeswoman stressed the couple had simply chosen the name from a book of baby names and it had nothing to do with Lord of the Rings.

So the Tories are the Liberal Party? I think (or thought) that the Labour Party is left leaning, and middle-ish, but is a party somewhat like Nader's...is that accurate? (or acc. enough?)

here, have some cheese ... it is very nice cheese ...

what better gaffer than some nice cheese, and some philosophy and intelligent political debate?

watch out for The mexican btw ...

... so Gaffer and Hector (shame on you! ) ... which party is currently the most right wing do you think? ... and at a guess, which way is the wind blowing for the weathercock liberals? ...

also- at an educated guess, how many chins does John Prescott have now- and doesn't not declaring these put him in potential conflict with the priveleges commitee?

best, BB

I heart you Eärniel.

Apparently Tony Blair is being investigated for allegedly selling seats in the House of Lords.

1. How would one go about selling the seat? I imagine it's not like buying a seat in an old movie theatre in order to restore it.

2. What the hey hey hey now!?

LOL Well, the Prime Minister appoints people to the House of Lords, and it seems Tony Blair decided to appoint some people who had loaned money to the Labour Party in the last general election campaign (donations to parties have to be declared, loans can technically be kept secret - hence the scandal).

Precisely. Though the problem is really with the House of Lords, and has been for decades.

He's a lame duck (that's a great expression). Surely this is the last thing a government with a reduced majority needs right now.

Sorry I missed this, not been around much lately due to pesky old RL commitments.

Most right-wing? A toss-up between the UK Independence Party and the British National Party. They former hate all foreigners, but especially Europeans; the latter hate everyone except Anglo Saxons.

In the mainstream, the Tories are still significantly more rightwing than Labour. For all of Bliar's neo-Thatcherite poncing about, Brown has actually done some moderate redistribution of wealth on the sly while no-one was looking.

However, you need to look deeper than the policies to tell them apart these days

John Prescott only has two chins, but one of them has recently been designated a Site of Special Scientific interest because previously-thought extinct species of moss, lichen and a nocturnal polecat have been found nesting there.

Here he is pictured when the team of zoologists broke the news to him:

Here he explains his views on having night vision cameras installed in his lower jowls to monitor their behaviour.

I watched John Prescott on Deputy PMQs this morning, and there's really something charming about his bumbling. It's impossible to hate someone like that - he even referred to that egg incident again, and brought up the William-Hague-at-Tory-party-conference-aged-13 story.

Gaffer, nice to see you BB was about to send out a search party.

I totally agree. You can't help but feel affection towards someone who will stick two fingers up at the press and twat some countryside alliance eedjit right in the gob.

Mind you, I think that bloke would have had him if the Secret Service hadn't pulled them apart.

How lovely of you both to say so. Just a fleeting visit for now. Back later hopefully.
