But we presume that elves are smart enough and have a decent enough command of language not to use silly terms that don't really apply.

*claps* bravo for doing the research, OrnelĂ*rĂ«. You spent more time on that one word than I would have.

Shana posted this in a new thread...
Quote:
For anyone who thinks they know their Quenya well; I could find no decent translation for this, though I am only an amateur. Please help if you can.
"Thou art Goddess"
or even...
"You are goddess"
would be fine.
Thanks,
Shan
....
you could say.. you is holy/angelic spirit or thou be holy/angelic spirit..
elyë: thou; even thou. (formal.)
le: you. (informal)
ná: is; be. (since I'm assuming that the subject 'thou' is singular, then so should the verb. Nar is for plural subjects.)
aini: (fem.) holy one; angelic spirit; goddess.
Vala: angelic power. (The actual angels of Eru are the Valar (pl).)

"ElyĂ« ná aini" would be my personal choice. But we can wait to see what OrnelĂ*rĂ« MistĂ« suggests.

I we have an attested example of nalyë, meaning "You are". Of course, elyë would probably be just as good, and better attested...

I posted a 'trivia' question in Quenya. Do you want to take a crack at it?

What is Frodo's second name? After [he] lost one finger. Gollum caused it.

Answer: Frodo Nertelepsi (Frodo Ninefinger), téna?

*pops up in thread again*

It's me again with my seemingly endless habbit of asking questions about Elvish.

I was wondering, what's the Elvish word for 'frog'? Yes, typically a question from me You can give it in whatever Elvish dialect you know.

I would say maybe cabor dithen if you follow Helge's current advice (and I've seen a couple examples on Elfling too) ... though the following 'advice' begins with a seemingly unexpected form

'Another example is the name Nan Tathren, "Vale of Willows" or literally "Vale Willowy"; we might have expected *Nan Dathren instead. We probably have to assume that the discrepancies are simply due to the fact that there were many variants or dialects of Sindarin; the rules for where soft mutation occurs differed somewhat from dialect to dialect. (I would advise people writing in Sindarin to let adjectives lenit in this position, though, since this seems to be the main rule.)' ~that Helge guy
