The Tempest is very interesting; there is a lot of depth in that one.

I always think of that play involving the ocean...but I have no idea if it does or not.

Hehe, as I said, I never read it. I only know the story my Latinteacher more or less told us.

I had to read MacBeth. We also watched the very bad movie. Very very bad movie. With a "floating" knife on a rope...

Yes, but she couldn't handle it. If you can't handle the psychological strain of being a cold blooded murderer, then don't kill your king and friend in the first place! Wuss!

I disagree, from a theatrical point of view. Completely boring to watch the problems of a sociopath. Why the Scottish play is interesting is because it takes fairly ordinary people and exposes them to extraordinary temptation.

Sorry, but I'm having trouble understanding what you are saying. Do you like the psychological breakdown of Lady MacBeth or not?

It takes place on an island, if I'm not mistaken, so you're close. (I read the Complete Works of Shakespeare in a marathon reading of a sort, so now I tend to mix plots somewhat...)

Oh wow, there is someone who wants dark chocolate enough to bow to ME?!? You must really like it...
*breaks off a large chunk* Here you go then. You know, all you had to do was ask, I can't say no anyhow.
How are you?

I think it's necessary, from the audience's perspective. Lady M goes along being a complete villian. If she never cracks up, what's the interest? She's like an evil robot. Tragedy requires a place where the lead has an option, and doesn't take it. The audience needs to be able to yell, "NO! Don't answer the door!" The reason that the character DOES answer the door is their tragic flaw.

Now, in the Scottish play, Lady M is not the lead. But her behavior makes the play go. If she was not ambitious and resolute, her lord would still be a minor character. The safe approach would have been to make her like Eve. Eve eats the apple, poor Adam gets sucked in. Hiss boo at Eve. But Shakespeare makes a more interesting and profound choice. Shakespeare gives her a place to really find out what her ambition has created. He gives all of us a look at the slice of Hell her choices make. "Yet, who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?" A minute ago, it was all about being Queen. Now she's covered in blood that can never be washed away. It's chilling.
