IIRC, he desired to rape her, but was unable - can't find the ref. now. Or perhaps there are 2 versions .... or more!

There are multiple versions of pretty much every passage Tolkien wrote. That's a given. Morgoths Ring contains one scene in which Melkor (Morgoth) goes to Arie (Arien), the Sun Maia, and proposes Marraige, offering to make her queen and co-ruler of the universe. She turns him down and he rapes her, but gets burned in the process, and after that light hurts him.
There are also multiple references in which Morgoth threatens (Or Sauron seems to threaten on Morgoth's behalf) to rape Luthien. But in the case I'm thinking of Tolkien actually clarifies in his notes that what takes place is actually a sexual assault. Just making sure your happy fuzzy fantasies of an unrealisticly perfect Middle Earth get disturbed on a regular basis.

I seem to recall that there is a version where he did rape Miriel, then a later version where he didn't. But, as you say, that is JRRT all over.

Oh, no no no, I saw that and several others Just didn't want to overstate something when one seemed to prove it well enough... not to mention, didn't feel like cutting and pasting any more... Choosing a quote now... that was somewhat difficult.

And the Men of the Silmarillion shall curse thee forever, Wayfarer, for alerting us Girls of Entmoot to their deplorable scheme, so that we may react in time and lock all the doors before anyone has a chance to escape...
*Elemmire retreats once again into corner of room, away from the fighting Girls of Entmoot, taking out handmade copy of Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth once again... hoping that SGH does not find her hiding space before she has a chance to finish...*

*cackles*
All is proceeding as I have forseen! Mwa-ha-ha-ha! *turns away from his palintir to address the rest of the people in the room, which is well hidden and far away from the crazy chicks* Poor Nurvingiel. She can't tell those guys aren't the real Men of the Silmarillion. Little does she know that these are a bunch of 13-year-old boys who let Finrod make them up to look like you, with promises that they'd have chicks going crazy over them. No, guess they didn't realize I meant 'Crazy' in the literal sense! Allright, then, about that elf babe you were going to set me up with...
