Oh - it's probably that guy who guarded the gates to Rath Dinen in Minas Tirith. Beregond had to slay him because he was slow with giving up the keys when Beregond had to save Faramir from being burned by Denethor.

Yet another riddle:

Eldest is she, of all in her house.
And she ought to be known as
“the Mouth of the South”.

Theoden is correct. Good guess, TSoF.

I am going to have to come up with some more demanding riddles. It appears there are some very savvy riddlers coming to this thread these days.

While I am working on a more difficult poser, see if you can guess this one.

What is the most ancient work of men that still remains in Middle Earth?

Good guess. However, there are other things even older than Minas Tirith, made by men.

Elrond, depending on what you mean by "made".

I'm wondering if it's the Scepter of Andunie. I can't think of anything actually made by Men that goes back to the First Age... but I'm not sure.

(this assumes you're asking about things that are still around at the time of LOTR)

The scepter is older than Orthanc. I'm wondering if there's anything Tuor made that he passed down and Elrond might keep. . .

Thanks to all the riddlers who replied. The scepter is the object I am thinking of, although the stone of Erech could possibly be even older. There is no way to prove this, but it was a hell of a guess and shows that y'all have your thinking caps on!

It is possible that the Barrow Downs could be the oldest of all. I did read somewhere that Men lived there before they entered Beleriand. Still it is not specifically stated, as it is for the scepter - and noted in the appendices of LotR.

Who Am I?

I was one of the Great in Middle Earth.
I have suffered many defeats,
and I have won many victories.
I was a counselor to Kings,
my influence was spread over vast territories.
A skilled craftsman, I was confined as a prisoner,
bereft of my freedom.

Yet all that once was, is gone,
and I who once was great, have now come to nothing.

You could roughly date the sceptre, I think. But the Stone of Erech hasn't much of a dating, except that it came from Númenor. It could have been made long before the fall, or just before.

Saruman for your latest riddle?

Balin is a good guess, he fits many of the clues, but I do not think we can consider him as "Great".

Saruman also fits well, but I was thinking jailed, as opposed to house arrest.

Keep trying. I will return in about 9 hours to see your guesses.
