The poor guy
He has always been one of my favorites ever since I started listening to hsi music.
Btw, his sixth symphony is very good . strange thing is its called the "Tragic" symphony, but its actually more like a military type symphony, and he was inspired to write it because of his wife!
I recommend the recording with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maurice Abravanel

KHAMUL, I KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO POST HERE!

We listened to the "funeral march" section of the third movement of Mahler's First Symphony in class and I loved it. To hear Frére Jacques in a minor key in rounds was amazing. I haven't gotten around to listening to the rest of the movement though.

Right now, I'm listening to Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers. I borrowed the CD from a professor and wow... Gorgeous.

*Congrats, you're now psychic like me.

so you like sacred music? I love it! try a Palestrina mass one day, very uplifting.
I have...
Mahler's 1st, 4th, 5th, 6,th and 9th symphonies.
I was quite ecstatic listening to the fourth since it involves vocal use

Mahler: Symphony no. 1/ miami symphony orchestra/ james judd
Mahler: Symphony no. 4/not sure..its a copy...
Mahler: Symphony no. 5/chicago symphony orchestra/ claudio abbado
Mahler: Symphony no. 6/ UtahSO/maurice abravanel
Mahler: symphony no. 9/cleveland orchestra/Pierre Boulez

I don't listen to much sacred music because I just don't have access to it, but I find chants very soothing. The first 45 seconds or so of Dixit dominus had me sold and I just had to hear the entire Vespers. I still haven't listened to it all the way through, but so far it's amazing.

What is a Palestrina mass? I'm not Catholic and I'm not very familiar with Catholic mass in the first place.

In that case, I'll have to find one of his masses.

But I hope you also know no. 2 and no. 8. If not, you have to listen to them as soon as possible. no.8 is overwhelming. It's called The Simphony of the Thosand, because it's played by two large orchestras, two (or three?) choirs and I think that 5 vocal soloists.

And no.2 "Resurrection" is his best for me (with no.9). I have the version of the Czech Philarmonic conducted by Vaclav Neumann. It's very good.

I like also very much no. 7, but IMHO it's not at the level of nos. 2 and 9.

I'd love to hear Mahler's 8th symphony because it is indeed called "Symphony of a Thousand". My music textbook says that an early performance in Philadelphia consisted of 1,069 orchestral players, chorus singers, and soloists.

Yes, I'm anxious to find no. 8, but its the only one I havent seen yet. I'll have to order it on amazon I guess...
Yes, and I've heard Mahler enthusiasts say that no. 2 is the greatest.
Our Nashville conductor is a big Mahler enthusiast, and it wasnt too long ago that he tackled both the first and second of Mahler's symphonies. I would have liked to attend (too busy though!!)...but I guess I would like to attend every single one of their classical concerts.

I just got two CDs today! Excitement. I thought of you Hector.

Dmitri Shostakovich - The Orchestral Songs, vol.2

Playlist:
1-6. Six Romances on Texts by Japanese Poets
Ilya Levinsky, tenor

7-12. Six Poems of Marina Tsvetayeva
Elenta Zaremba, contralto/alto

13-23. Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti
Sergei Leiferkus, baritone

Hector Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique

Playlist:
Symphonie Fantastique
1. I. Rêveries - Passions
2. II. Un bal
3. III. Scène aux champs
4. IV. Marche au supplice
5. V. Songe d'une nuit du Sabbat

La Damnation de Faust op. 24

Both CDs were made by Deutshe Grammaphone. The Berlioz one was used, and only $6! Shostakovich was new, and $8.50. Sweet deal!

Nurv, I could kiss you!(wait! I think I will!) The Symphonie Fantastique is said to be the most amazing first symphony for a composer (no offense to Mahler or Shosty!).
I havent heard those Shosty songs, but I sure need to!

The oboe. no longer the accustomed high-pitched voice of poignantly sweet pathos, was now heard singing comfortably in its natural, middle register.
Ahh......Mahler's oboe.

Most oboe music is really random. There wasn't one big oboe composer. Everybody wrote a little.

A lot of "oboe" music is written generally for C instruments--violin, flute, oboe. Such as the Handel sonatas.

BTW, What are y'alls favorite instruments....in the classical orchestra?

Mine is, obviously, the oboe.

Does anyone here play an instrument?

As for myself, classical piano, oboe, and recently added organ.
