2007 TU24

.. is an asteroid that will be passing us by on January 29th, at a lunar distance of 1.37. It was noticed a couple of months ago, and the 'exact' orbit (don't know how exactly they can calculate it.. especially since NASA says its diameter is "between 150 and 600 km in diameter") has been calculated now.

NASA news

I am excited (and probably late with the news.. But I don't think anyone else has said anything about it here yet?)!

Me neither.. :/ It'll be too light here, anyway. Still excited, though. XD We'll probably get to see some pictures of it..

Would be cool to have a telescope, though..

The thing on the meteorite was on the news here. But they said that you could only see it from specific places with the help of instruments.
There is an old observatorium here in the city. With the last meteoriteshower you could buy a ticket to go and watch it there. Perhaps they'll do the same now. Should check it out...
Wow, that vid is amazing. I'm rapidly starting to appreciate the ocean more and more here!

Who's us? And does this club have strange "initiations"? Am I required to do or know something specific? Now I want details off course! Or better yet, just bombard me with pretty pics of pretty fish.

I always thought that "sobering up" either meant to get over being drunk or to get back to reality, e.a. not so positive. So I was expecting some greenpeace movie on polution or what not, but instead I get to see pretty fish and sunflowers under water. Yay
Not sure if this is the right thread for this conversation though...

Gimme a few minutes to rewatch the video, and I'll make it right.
I actually dove in a place just like that.

Whats scary is that this asteroid, the size of several city blocks... was not detected until last October. Makes you wonder what else is out there about to come within a hair of earth doesnt it.

Indeed. Two months is not much time. Just shows that we don't know everything.. I can believe that detecting an asteroid like this this late is more of an exception, though.

I just find it even more exciting. X)

What I wonder is whether we could do something about it if we did detect something, or not...
