Ja, 'looked into' would be right. I haven't made any attempt to pronounce those triphthongs yet, though. Wie goed doet, goed ontmoet.

I don't really think Dutch is that beautiful but I wouldn't trade my Flemish language for any in the world! It has its moments so to speak, and certain great phrases that are impossible to translate in any othe language.
Oh, that's impressive! Would you be able to translate for us a few examples of those phrases?

Lai, I've just noticed you put 'Sverige' as one of your interests in your profile. Du stal min man, and now my obsession too. *Glares*

Ooh, let me think...

Most of it is dialect I think.

"Ik ga even de geit verzetten."
"I'm going to move the goat."
We hear this sentence once in a language game on TV. Apparantly 'moving the goat' in Dutch is an old way of saying 'going to the toilet'. We thought this so hilarious that we used that certain sentence at home ever since. But it loses a bit of charm in the translation. And the 'even' doesn't quite have a english counterpart as far as I now, it means as much as 'for a second, for a while' but not quite IMO.

I'll see if I can come up with more intranslatable Flemish.

At least I think so.

According to a pronunciations site:
SK wird zu (deutsch: "SCH") wenn es vor einem dieser Buchstaben steht: e, i, y, ä, ö.
wich means .... Sk gets a german sch when it is before the letters: e, i, y, ä, ö
So I think it is like the german Schule.
But I am not quite shure, as I think you have mentioned that pronunciation before.

That is rather funny. It reminded me of the polite way of saying 'Do a poo' or 'Wee' in Cambodian. Literally, 'Pooing' is 'Squatting big' and 'Weeing' is 'Squatting small'. There are also some other ways of expressing the need to go to the toilet.

I was only kidding about you translating those things, by the way, just to frustrate you. I love those untranslatable things of languages. In Chinese, a way of expressing disbelief is by saying 'your head!'. As in 'Big, you head!' for 'It's big, my a**!'.

Ok, let's do a Kent poll. I would have much more Kent if a) I had a faster connection or b) if those who had Kent on their computer were even online for me to download it off them.

I knew you were kidding. The untranslatable things are what make the different languages so unique IMO. I think you can only say you master a different language if you understand the words and expressions that have no equal translated counterpart in your own language.

Ack, du har fler sånger än jag, JD.
Jag har:

Om du var har
Kärleken väntar
Bianca
Vad två öron klarar
En himmelsk drog
Sverige

I've put it roughly in order from favourite to least here. I hate Sverige, it's so slow and unlike the rest of their music I have.

Hur mycket förstår du? (of the lyrics, jag menar)
Jag ska få 'Pärlor' och 'Dom Andra' nu.

[Edit] And now I have 'Dom Andra' too. Wow, it's very easy to understand compared to some other songs.
...and now also Pärlör.

Jon, could you please help me with something?

Du sa som det var och det kändes så bra så nu kan jag göra nånting själv, göra nå’t själv.
I think the first part means You say how it was and that sounds so good .... (at least I understand it that way)
but could you please tell me what the rest means?
Tack.

I agree to all of that! Send me that Dutch stuff now, if you please. I don't care if it's half-finished, I want it now!
And Lai, send me some German essay of yours too, will you dear?

*Awaits to see if her own translation matches that of the Swede*

I thought once more about the /sk/ pronunciation you are searching. The one pronounced like the spanish /j/. I think that would be a german /ch/ like in the word ICH.

Is nekulturny the correct spelling of the word?
I believe it's nyekulturny...which means 'incultured' or 'uncivilised' (at least I think so ) I'm not sure. Of course since I am writing it with the Latin alphabet, it's all phonetic.

How are you typing all these Russian characters. anyway?
ummmmm...It's not very, VERY complicated but...for a computer-illiterate geek like me it's, well.....

My russian teacher taught me how to set my computer to type different alphabets. I still have the email. But it's only for Windows XP. So...

Info assimilated. However in that case, if the German /ch/ sound in ICH is pronounced like Spanish /j/, then it is not really the same sound as Swedish /sk/ in eg SKED (though there are some Swedes who pronounce it that way).
