Outstanding! Thanks for making the effort! Ost-In-Edhil it is.

Here is a new riddle for y'all to twist your brains over...

Who am I?

I achieved a mighty quest
that brought me riches and fame.
I attempted another adventure
which failed and caused my bane.
Alas for all my friends and kin,
our realm we could not save.
Our foes were strong and I was taken,
now I lie in this watery grave.

Hello there Radagast! I was wondering if you were ever going to wander back into this thread. Thankyou for guessing at my riddle but Thorin is not the answer. The answer is found in LOTR as are the great majority of my riddles (so you won't need any other books).

It is not Earnor. You were closer with Thorin. Elvengirl is on the right track with the "watery grave" angle, but it is not Isildur.

Oops! Posted the wrong thing at first - didn't pay close enough attention... it's Arvedui! Last King of Arthedain!

My first try was Tar-Palantir (or whichever was the last King of Numenor - don't have a book handy to check) - but his grave wasn't watery. [CORRECTION - 10-19-03 - FOR POSTERITY: Ar-Pharazon "The Golden" was that last king. Tar-Palantir preceded him and was one of The Faithful.] On the other hand, not sure if Arvedui had achieved fame on a previous quest...(?)

Uh - I don't think I can come up with a riddle myself though - even if I get this right.

Valandil, it's not in turns. You don't have to come up with a riddle if you solve one.

I tried to find some characters in LOTR tht drowned to death. I found few; but they didn't fit to the other hints. (Amroth and Nimrodel, for example, or Frodo's parents.)

Boromir?

Welcome to the riddling thread Valandil. You can guess at or post your own riddles at any time. It is total anarchy here, no rules to worry about.

Your guess of Arvedui is almost valid except for the riches and previous quest clue. However, it is not the answer I am looking for, so put your thinking cap on and come up with another guess!

Here's a clue.... Both quests occurred in the northern part of middle earth in the Third Age.

None of those are correct Radagast. Read above for a clue that may eliminate some characters from consideration.

I didn't say they are correct. They were obviously not correct.

When you say northern part- do you include Eriador(sp.) too?

this riddle is hard! Can't think of any person who drowned and do two adventures and destroyed his kin by doing so!

Yes, Eriador is included.

Yes this riddle is a bit difficult, but y'all are getting very close with some of your guesses. Close to the adventures that is. Also, y'all are running out of characters who died in water so I expect that you will guess the answer soon! Smaug was one that I had forgotten, but he died in water as well! That was a good guess.

LOL! Yeah, I did that on purpose, too. I had another verse that went with it, but I decided to leave it out and make people think it was the Ring. Mean of me, I know.

Not mean Rosie, more like fiendishly clever!

Care to guess who lies in the "watery grave"?

Here's another clue:
The character was a contemporary of Gandalf, Bilbo, and Frodo etc.

Boromir was a good guess, but as you mentioned he did not achieve riches and fame earlier.

Here's another clue: Boromir was present when the fate of the character in question became known.

Can't think of anyone. These clues only make it harder.
