Better than to win a /_i_e/ of /_l_r_/ though it be

The following are incorrect (with the line # before):

6 everyone, 6 win,6 both here and hear,10 Society,12 help,15 in,16 web,18 so

All other additions correct! Good Work!

Incorrect:

1 everyone,1 win, 2 Now, 3 Society, 3 now, 4 orcs (though an excellent guess!)
5 hold, 6 stone, 7 I, 7 meaning, 7 in, 7 stones, 7 on, 8 him,

Correct:
"halt and hinder" "victory is victory" "fly South and West" "no worse" and anything else I didn't notice as incorrect;-)

You guys are good at this!!!

*cross-post with Val! (the times are vastly different, but I promise your post wasn't there when I started this)

*Are you SURE this word isn't "now"? I literally checked all three-letter words with O in the middle and "now" is the ONLY one that made any sense. "too" was second place.

** Morgoth doesn't fit the letter-spaces you left, but it's ONLY thing Tolkien-ish that I can think of that would fit there context-wise.

Weeeeellll, I might have been watching iCarly to get my LOTR juices flowing (don't ask how it works, but it totally does) AND eating dinner.

[competitive side is challenged] But I came up with more different words than you! [/competitive side]

After the Valandil-Midge cross-post, we are left with this:

The Valar! They have forsaken you and they hold men in scorn.
What use to look westward across the endless Sea to a dying sunset in the West? There is but one Vala with whom we have to do, and that is Morgoth.
And if in the end we cannot overcome him at least we can hurt him and hinder him. For victory is victory however small, nor is its worth only from what flows from it.
But it is expedient also. Secrecy is/_o_/ finally possible, arms are the only wall against Morgoth (sorry about that) If you do nothing to halt him all Beleriand will fall under his shadow before many years are passed and then one by one he will smoke you out of your earths and what then?
A pitiable (sorry again, it is amazing that Midge came up with "patriable" to fill the void, and that Valandil figured it out with the extra letter!) remnant will fly south and west to cower on the shores of the Sea caught between Morgoth and Osse ( I hoped to keep you guessing a bit longer on that one!)
Better then to win a /_i_e/ of glory though it be shortlived for the end will be no worse.

Only two pesky little words left, and the speaker

Note to other guessers: Both these have been guessed already and Tani has not said that they were incorrect. We replaced them ourselves...

And don't worry about the extra/missing letters, Tani. We've all done it in our time, and the longer the quote, the more likely that is to happen - you picked a doozie!

Ah... speaker... I'm not well-versed on the wars against Morgoth, but I'll guess... Huor?

Both "not" and "time" are correct (again) And thus the quote is solved in its entirety! Thanks, it was indeed a looooooooong quote:-) Thanks also for endowing me with a nickname, I now feel fully acclimated into the Moot:-)

As to Hour....nope...but "beware, you may strike closer the mark than you suppose"

Well, I've just about exhausted my knowledge of people who a) lived in THAT time period and b) would feel that way about the Valar.

Now that it's all over, I do have a question. That particular quote is out of The Children of Hurin , rather than the books listed at the beginning. But I figured that if you allowed quotes out of Unfinished Tales , CoH would be OK. Was I correct?

This one I don't know. It's funny because I thought I'd recognize quotes from Turin, having just finished reading that whole story not 6 months ago, from the Silmarillion AND UT. I guess in that case, it was a disadvantage, because I didn't realize you were using something that I hadn't read after I had ruled out the speaker.

We might check the Loremasters' quote game to see if CoH is included in that list.

Edit: CoH IS included in the list for the Loremasters' quote game, so this quote should have gone on that thread. I'm not sure where they are at the moment, whether they're waiting for a quote to be solved or a quote to be posted. Posted is my guess, because they're pretty far down in the list.

Edit: Yes, they're waiting on a post, and I was actually the one who solved the quote, but I know absolutely nothing about the HoM or CoH - haven't read them hardly and only own one HoM. If you have more CoH or HoM quotes and would like to revive that thread with a new quote, go right ahead, Tani.

I wondered if it was from one of the other books. Yes - we try to keep this thread to just those books listed. It's alright though.

I'll post something soon.
