That guess is much closer to the mark in several ways. However it is not the correct answer. Good on ya for trying though.

Mount Doom for the riddle?
Bonjour, Earniel! (Or should I say "goede morgen")?

Yes, shesabrandybuck called me just as she said she would in her post. While I had told her several years ago about riddling here, I was unaware that she had actually joined our community. She urged me to come back and play here some more.

Even so, I couldn't be parted from my resident Ent expert for too long now, could I?

Also, I am here to inform you that your guess of Mt. Doom is incorrect. Please try again.

It is not the stone bridge, but I do thank you for trying even a "wild stab". Participation is the only way this format will work!

In fact, y'all are all such good sports and guessers, that I am going to give you another clue. It is the second line of the third verse to my little poem.

Ensorcelled and strong,
One-Hundred feet long.

Fire I spurn,
As I cannot burn.

Chained, I move freely.

What? One hundred feet long,
And it's chains not a bond?
Ensorcelled and stong?
Heck... it's gots to be... GROND!

Great beasts precede me.

That's Grond, Chains Grond.
I'm shaken, not stirred.

You are correct again, Val. Grond is the answer to the riddle. Ensorcelled refers to the "spells of ruin". Also, the text says that "upon its housing no fire would catch". This, and all the rest can be referenced at the end of the chapter The Siege Of Gondor.

I shall return to my riddling room and craft y'all another one soon.

A new riddle...

We live our lives beyond the edge.
When once attacked no bets we hedged.

We do not fear what lies so near.
And we keep a gate, a way that’s clear.

Throughout the land we have great fame,
Can you now guess our family name?

A good guess, but it is not the family name I seek. Thank you for playing, and I hope you will try again.

A most excellent guess, Val. It could almost work. Still, there is a family name that works a bit better with the clues, and Beornings is not it.

Keep trying, if you will...

Brandybuck it is! You've deduced the correct answer (which has been on my mind recently for some strange reason ).

Well done, me!

The edge is of course the boundary of the Old Forest with Buckland where it meets the Hedge. (didja see my little pun?). Buckland was attacked by the trees only once in recorded history, with the Bucklanders winning easily using axes and fire. The gate, near Crickhollow was built for access to the forest should it become necessary. The Bucklanders certainly respected the Old Forest, but they did not fear it.

Stay tuned as I shall soon reenter my Riddling Room for some more fun and games...

Here's another riddle for y'all to twist your brains over...

Beacon-site where black met white.
Ten there were who fought that fight.

Editors Note: You must identify the combatants as well as the site.

Amon Sul, Weathertop, when Gandalf faced the Nazgul?
I realize he was gray at the time but it doesn't rhyme...

Yeah, it messed with my rhyme. Also, using the word white almost guarantees association with Gandalf, which makes the riddle easier to solve.

I had considered using dark and light in the opening line, but took a more specific route as can be seen. Oh well, those are the riddling dilemmas that I often face.

Your answer is quite correct. Amon Sul was a beacon of the North Kingdom in the days of old.

Well done!

Now try this one out for size:

A living man who has no name.
Guarding death’s door is his claim to fame.
Where in the war he too was slain.

Since he has no name, y'all will just have to describe him as best as y'all can.

Goede morgen will do fine. Resident Ent expert, eh I had nearly forgotten all about that.

Nice to see you riddling again. Your last one is pretty tough.

I'm guessing the old man at the door to the paths of the dead. When Brego and Baldor approached, he told them, "the way is shut...etc."
