Gotta 'fess up here: I voted Labour, in spite of Iraq. What turned me was Michael Howard saying the NHS was a "Stalinist system", thus revealing the true danger we face. That and the LibDems provided a pretty anaemic opposition to the war and I had a few serious problems with some of their other policies. Overall, a good result, though I would have preferred a smaller majority necessitating an early departure by President Bliar. Lots of Blairites got kicked out, so that 66 majority consists of mostly old labour style backbenchers. So ID cards may be out the window for example. Also good was how badly the Tories did. If you consider how many Labour voters defected to the LibDems (about 4,000 of them did in my constituency), the lapse in anti-tory tactical voting, and the fact that UKIP are no longer drawing off as much of their natural support, it is pathetic that they only increased their overall share by 1%. Ha ha ha! What do others think? Did the LibDems do well enough to be able to claim that we really have a 3-party system now, for example? Last edited by The Gaffer : 05-06-2005 at 06:16 AM. |

i think the lib dems have done very well, 59 (without NI count) is the best for the last 100 yeras, Lloyd George only got 59 seats overall in the twenties, and he led the government, we have to remember, i think that they have proven that the lib dems are there, and we also have to remember that the popular vote was somthing like 33% lab, 32% tory and 25% lib dem, if we had PR, we would certainly have a truly 3 way system

Agree. Currently they're on 62 with 23 seats still to declare. Also, they came in second in lots of seats. The challenge is to face both ways: they have to be left enough to attract Labour voters without scaring off too many Tories. The fact that they didn't do well head to head against the Tories was a sign that maybe they're going to have problems with being too leftwing.

So it boils down to Tony making a 3rd term, matching Maggie the Iron Lady Thatcher in this feat.
Cool on free elections!

New Labour, which is considerably to the right of old Labour it seems.

oh yes here's a serious question for someone who has just been elected "mr galloway, are you pleased that you have managed to oust one of the few black women in the house of commons?" what kind of a question is that? it wasn't a question of colour, or sex, it was a question of the right person being elected now normally i like jeremy paxman, but my respect for him has gone way down now |
