Oh, I don't know. Chances are that the Tolkienhater will probably not know much of other works than LoTR and the Hobbit. In that case he'll (or she'll) never recognize the less frequent Tolkien-names.

In my opinion and experience, Tolkien haters were produced by the movies, not the book. If they hated it, they wouldn't have read the book. (And if they did read it and hated it they would do everything in their power to forget.) Unless you name your child something obvious, like Eowyn or Frodo, they'll never know!

That's a good point. Just dropping the name into conversation and pretending to do not know the origin.

Though this won't apply to me for a long time, I've considered the idea for sure. I've always thought Eowyn would be a really nice name. Tinuviel has a nice ring to it too... probably as a middle name though.

And you?
Sure, I'd name my kid a name from Lord of the Rings! I've always liked the name Samwise. It's very nice. Or if it was a girl I'd name her Rosie. But never Frodo or something like that.

Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day. You could name your daughter Laura Lynn and they would never know!

Good idea, but I don't like Laura and Lynn apart. Laurelin is better. I told my mother that I wanted to call my (future) daughter Laurelin, and she thought it was weird. Then, I launched into a discussion about the depth of Tolkien's world, which resulted in her questioning my sanity ('Umm.. You don't believe all these things exist do you?') 'Don't worry,' I assured her. 'Of course they are real'.

I also like Rana, Lorien, Este and Arien for girls' names. I don't like the name Sam enough to call a son that, so I just won't name one with a Tolkien name. Hmm.. maybe Iluvatar?
