I love Arrival of the Queen Sheba (that has the wonderful oboe part, right?)

Percy Grainger-- I've played a good bit of music by him, such as Lincolnshire Posy, an arrangement of English folk songs. I've also heard some of his choral arrangements.

Once Upon A Time,
Mr. Grainger was going to attend a concert in south africa. Just before the concert he thought it wouldnt hurt to takle a quick run through a small jungle.
a lookout at the concert hall was waiting for him, and finally he saw a big cloud of dust. It seemed the mr grainger made friends with some bushman and wanted to take them to the concert!

I've heard "Arrival..." in the movie Four Weddings And A Funeral and thought it absolutely terrific.

Merc, Grainger sound interesting since I'm quite into English folk songs.

Hb, I think I'll definitely listen to and buy a cd with his music then.

Thats great G-Wolf .
"The Warriors" is a considerably short piece, and it was paired on the same cd (not sure if I told you this already) as Holst's Planets.
The recording is one by conductor John Eliot Gardiner. Not sure if you're really specific about recordings or anything, but thats the version I have and its great. The "Mars" movement is particularly stirring and loud.

It truly is. BTW, do you have any cd:s with Purcell and if so what do you think of his work? I've looked him up on the Net and there appears to be a plethora of cd:s with his music which makes it difficult to choose which to buy.

G-Wolf, I must say that I am sad to inform you that I am not familiar with any Purcell, except a little piece called "Tune and Air" which I love to listen to.

LCoU, that sounds like a great recording, I'll have to look it up.

I've only heard "Mars", which I have on a CD-collection called Essential Classics.

Maybe I should at least buy one cd with his music to hear if it's as good as that of his which I've heard in some church concerts I've attended.

Lol, all this talk about 'The Planets' made me go and put it on
Chrys, I was wondering if you would like to help with an "anecdote" project for this thread, where we look up interesting classical music anecdotes and I'll stick 'em all on the first post.
G-Wolf, you're welcome to help as well.

I love lots of Purcell pieces (mostly highlights of his operas), but I only have listened to one one complete opera: King Arthur. I think I only liked the highlights of this opera too

Maybe someone can help me with names....

There was a famous guy (lets call him A). A was going to direct another famous guy's (B) orchestra piece. A got to the stand, and on it was not B's work, but C's. The two (B's and C's) looked exactly the same from the outside. A directed the entire piece with no mistakes from memory . Impressive, huh?

wow! the NSO (Nashville Symphony Orchestra) wrote me back!!

Quote:
Dear Mr. Stephens:

Thank you very much for your inquiry and suggestions, and I apologize for
not writing back to you sooner. As for Berlioz' "Harold in Italy," we will
be performing this work with our principal violist Daniel Reinker on June 12
& 13 during our Beethoven & Beyond Festival. Since Symphonie Fantastique
was last performed in May 2002, we may give a little more time to program it
again.

As for Janacek's Glagolitic mass, I have forwarded your suggestions to
Maestro Kenneth Schermerhorn. We agree that it is a fantastic work and hope
to program it, should right occasions arise.

Thank you again for your interest in The Nashville Symphony. We greatly
appreciate your suggestions.

Best wishes,

Makiko Freeman
btw-I highlighted the "Maestro Kenneth Schermerhorn" part.

Wow that's so cool Hector! It's awesome when symphonies take your suggestions! I hope you get to go see their concert if they preform the works you suggested.

I've played French classical music (obviously, I'm studying it in France!).

Its quite interesting...you add so much to what is written expressive wise. There is a lot of personal touches to it. I especially enjoy Debussy's Childrens Corner Suite. They are so fun to play! Esp. Golliwog's Cakewalk.

At the moment I'm a bit short of cash so buying any of his work will have to wait.

I'm not quite sure about what you mean by anecdotes. Is that articles about classical music?
