The Aelin-uial were the lakes and fens that formed where the rivers Aros & Sirion met. It was also known as the Meres of Twilight. It was a site that Turgon and Finrod built their hidden strongholds at Gondolin and Nargothrond. The Aelin-uial was under the control of the Kingdom of Doriath and it was a secret ferry way of Doriath.

I just started reading the Silmarillion again and I chanced upon the answer to your question Rad. I have not read the story of Eärendil befor today. Anyhow the names of his Mariner companions were Falathar Erellont and Aerandir.
