congrats, tessar! very well done..

i had my last book exam today! i got to choose the books myself (with approval from the professor, of course), and the books i chose were great. :P they were mostly about host-parasite relationships, the behaviours associated with these relationships (some really cool stuff) and of course the evolutionary tale behind all of this. i also liked the style of the author, and for instance this gem, that was found in the introduction:

"Like pornography, parasites elude definition and [...] may be known primarily when we see them."
- Janice Moore in Parasites and the Behavior of Animals

the exam went well, i think, although it feels like maybe the books i chose were too easy.. i wrote about topics and gave examples that weren't mentioned in the book, 'cause i do love parasites and i've read a lot about them. so we'll see how she (the professor) likes that.

oh, and s came home for the weekend (from england), which is awesome. he's taking his finnish exam tomorrow; he needs it to apply for citizenship in the fall. he's pretty comfortable with the language, so i'm confident he'll do well..
and in two weeks i'll be going to england, too!

i've also been giving lectures in 3 courses now, biotopes, ecology and behavioural ecology. it's quite nice, actually, and a very good experience.

Thank you all. I hate to brag, but I am sooooo relieved.

Actually this is quite exciting, because I believe it means that I have the time now to begin reviewing my math materials to get a head start on the summer.

Just got a new set of headphones... but not the earbud kind, the actual headphone kind, with earmuffs big enough to eat half your face.

They were only $10 but OMG!!!! So amazing. I had forgotten how much better these sound (even a cheap pair) compared to more expensive earbuds. It reminds me of standing in the middle of the choir, or sitting in the middle of an orchestra.

Happy - am leaving tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon for a trip to visit my parents.

Alone.

As in no children with me, or husband.

Just me and my parents.

Yay!

(I really needed a vacation, and my parents are in their 80s and are getting more frail and forgetful, and I wanted to spend some quality time with them before they get worse )

I'm going to stay until Friday, so it's a good, long visit, and a much-needed rest

Sounds good, RÃ*an - I hope you have a great time with your parents! My grandparents are about the same age, and I've tried to spend as much time with them as possible - and last year one of them did pass away, and I was very happy then to have spent all that time with them.

Oh, and I hope you get some nice rest, too!

Yea, it's nice to get a bit of alone time with the old folks, without having to worry about spouses or them being distracted by grandkids.

I took Thursday and Friday off.
So here I am, enjoying a long weekend on a small beautiful sunny (albeit windy) island, with a big cabin all to myself

Just had a four-day long weekend holiday here, with the rather incongruously grouped Children's Day and Tomb-Sweeping Day falling together this year on Monday and Tuesday- which is great because it makes the next week seem so short too.

photo exhibition day today. not a big exhibition, but anyway: it's the first time we've showed off our photos (apart from online)!

from the photography thread:

it's a risk we're taking with the book, since we don't actually know if anyone will buy it - we ordered 10 copies of it, and if it actually sells, we'll order more. otherwise, we lost a couple of hundred euros. it's 80 pages, so there are quite a few photos.
