So... does "Southern" qualify as a language around these here parts?
Reminds me: after Jimmy Carter was elected US President in 1976, someone came out with a cute little booklet called "How to Speak Southern" - it was a riot! If "Southern" is NOT an acceptable language for this thread... well, I had some Deutsch in der Hoch Schule (drei Jahre... mit einer (r??) sehr gute Lehrerin - aber es ist vor uber zwanzig Jahre!). I speak only bits of Spanish and remember a little of the Mandarin I learned for my China trip. Uh... did I say that German part right? |

Zdravstvuy!(hello) The thing about russian is it's hard to pronounce so many consonants! For english-speakers anyway...I know a russian guy who was saying that it is hard to pronounce so many vowels!
Important russian sentences...Let's see...lol. I've really only started learning. The learning-a-new-alphabet thing wasn't a problem at all, really. The worst parts so far are the verbs of motion and cases. I haven't really gotten into the verbs of motion, thank goodness. But I hear it's pretty crazy. Russian pronunciation is pretty simple. I was listening to my mother explaining to my youngest sister about long a's and short e's and all that junk....I was horrified! How do they expect people to understand such a complicated language? lol. But really...when you think about it...in english, any vowel can sound like any other vowel. There are almost no rules. That is, compared to other languages. Scary. I'm glad I was born into the language instead of trying to learn it mid-life.

Here's an 'important' russian sentence: 'Ya skuchayu po tebye.' (I miss you)
Tell me if you can see these russian letters...(maybe some of you can and some of you can't) ? ?????? ?? ????. Argh! It's so hard to type in russian when you don't know where the letters are! (not to mention, I'm pretty bad at typing in english, anyway)

Oh, and, "Kak dyela?" is, basically, "How're things?"
Dobriy dyen-Good day Dobriy vecher-Good evening pozhaluysta-please (used as 'please' and 'you're welcome') Shto?-What? Kto?-Who? Kogda?-when? inogda-sometimes vsegda-always

Russian reminds me of Yugoslavian. Not surprising.

The most common pronunciation of the /sk/ sound? Surely that must the [s]+[k] sound, like in the English word /skull/. /sk/ can also be pronounced like the German word ich. /sk/ has a third possible pronunciation too, which might be a little similar to Spanish /j/ but still it's different. I have no idea of how to describe the sound . I'm sure it exists in German but I never had German so I can't come up with any German word as an example Quote:

Wow! 8 consonants! That takes the cake; I've been analysing so many words lately and I've been trying to find one with the most consonants in a row. But that's a compound word, eller hur? So it doesn't count. Quote:

Unfortunately I have heard the lead singer of Kent pronounce them all three ways. Ack! *Delights that she has the translation, though* Eh! Everybody, we Aussies have charming accents too, thanks very much! |

I also don't have any problems with pronouncing so many consonants. I hate the word kärring, it's so not similar to any german pronunciation of /k/. Jon, give me a swedish word with /sk/ and I try to figure out a german word. And are you recommending Kent to everybody?

Tjena Lai! Who's the question about Kent addressed to? I discovered Kent on my own, tack så mycket! Ommm duuuu varrr häääärrr... Kärring looks nice to me, though its meaning is a bit..strange. Jag älskar svensk /u/, like it the word /slut/. (No, I'm not being rude, I just like that word!) Nu ska vi tala på svenska här, Lai! Last edited by Linaewen : 11-15-2003 at 08:51 AM. |
