France has "language police" to keep the language pure. It's one of the few things they have that I wish the US had.

Alaska is separated from the US, and they are doing just fine.

What language would the US want to keep pure? That is insane!

If the US had a 'language police' to keep any language pure in the US, I'd be one of the first people arrested in a protest, I'm sure.

Why should the US have a similar thing? It';s one of the great things that make English and America so great. English grows and expands and is more accepting of words. America accepts immigrants and they bring their heritage and it gets incorporated into the American fabric. Both have the effect of making America a much more rich and exciting culture and making the English language more rich and expressive.

I DIDN'T say that. I said I wished we had it. They are two different things. .......

I knew what you were saying. But why would you wish we had "language police"? I don't want English to become a closed off language. I think the introduction of foreign words is what makes English such a rich and descriptive language.

Yeah - it was you and IP mostly. But don't worry - everyone knows the US is the best. They just have a hard time admitting it.

And yeah - this thread has somewhat gone off topic. But it's not COMPLETELY off topic.

Well then you wish that the US had the "language police" like the french. I however - I like the fact that English is such a dynamic language and isn't afraid of incorporating foreign words into it's vocabulary.

More we should be outraged that Streisand's husband (Brolin) is playing R. Regan in the fall sweeps on CBS.

Dude! This thread is about the 'language police' of the French gov't banning non-French words! And you are saying it would be nice to do that in the US?

Nothing is wrong - I'm just wondering why you would want a "language police".

No it's not a dictatorship - but if there were "language police" - then it would be on it's way to becoming one then.

That is outrageous - but what would you expect - Hollywood is mostly liberal. I'm actually surprising they're doing a movie on Ronald Reagan though. I figured they would have picked Hollywood's darling - Bill Clinton. I wonder if they'll include how Ronald Reagan was a Democrat and then abandoned the party for the Republicans.

jerseydevil, it's interesting that you bring up America as being accepting of the dynamism of the English language. One little-known hot topic of the past few years is the official dictionary for tournament Scrabble. The rest of the world has switched to a combined American-British dictionary, including Britain itself - but America is still governed solely by the American lexicon (which does include British variants and the like - it's the obscurer words and mistaken omissions that really make the difference).

No, I don't think they'll find it that very hard to do. In my view the word e-mail isn't used much in French altogether. In school we were taught 'le courrier électronique' as the french translation for e-mail. And I've never heard 'e-mail' used in French before. Though it stands to reason, try and give some french sound to e-mail. It just doesn't sound right. I can understand why the French want to change it. I hadn't heard 'courriel' either but that's what I'll be using in French for now on.

PS: Draken, I believe the word 'entrepreneur' is also French.

I thought they used e-mail. The french use a ton of english words.

Were you taught that french word for email in france or in a french class? There is a difference.

One example of english words in french would be "le weekend" I was taught that as the weekend (currently taking french).

My mom has told me that the french gov tried to ban that word too - it didn't work, and neither will banning email; im sure that they use it.

I know there'a difference. I learned it in French class, though my teacher lived the better part of her life in France.

Now that I think of it, of course there should be at least some of the French who use e-mail. What the use of banning the word otherwise? All I can say is that I haven't heard a Frenchman use the word e-mail before.

I must admit I forgot all about the word weekend. Since we've got the same word in Dutch, I forgot it was originally English. My mistake. Did they try to ban weekend as well? Never would have guessed. In class I learned both 'week-end' and 'fin de la semaine'.
