That depends what you consider England. "Modern" England though came about through the Norman Conquest which took place in 1066. But there was the Anglo-Saxon rule before that as well as the Roman rule and others. The Norman Conquest though united England and set up modern England as we know it today.

Of course England has a long history - the Magna Carta, for a sort time it was a Republic and didn't have a king, the take over of Scotland and Wales - not to mention at various times control over Ireland (although currently they only control Northern Ireland). Even through all this - I would consider 1066 as the beginning of England.

Happy Canada Day, Canadians!

I changed my avi for you today.

Too bad you didn't get your independence the way the U.S. got theirs. By kicking some British ass, sending them wimpering all the way back across the ocean with their tails between their legs. BWHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!

oops... yeah... uh... sorry Brits. Too much sun on vacation.

I love Canada. I've only been to Ontario and Alberta, but hope to see more of your beautiful country some day.

On a personal note, I came very close to being a Canadian citizen -- after WWII my parents applied for Canadian visas, but were turned down. However, the US granted them visas, so they immigrated here (where I was born).
Almost the same with my parents- they applied for Australian and Canadian emigration, but the Canadian visa came through first.

Lucky for me! Just think, 40 above instead of 40 below; miles and miles of beaches instead of frozen ponds, surfing instead of hockey, bikinis instead of toques....

Actually, I prefer frozen ponds to beaches, birches to palm trees and Polartec to Lycra...

In fact, my fave magazine is published in Yellowknife, NT: Up Here, Life at the Top of the World. When it's hot and steamy in the US Midwest, I can learn how to maintain an ice road and read recipes for caribou stew...

Oh, Canada!
