Why did they need someone to watch at all. There was loads of snow and they were at the top of a mountain!

Could it be an allegory of the times that they lived in? The fate of middle earth lies with Frodo, a hobbit. It was known that once the One Ring was destroyed the Elves would return to the West as would Gandalf. It was then the time of man thus they carried the hobbits to symbolise this? The fate of hobbits and humans were interwined not only in the 'here and now' but also in the future whereas Gandalf and the Elves had no future whether Frodo succeeded or no?

Hehe - yes, horrible - but I think nessa had a good thought there anyway.

Hey Silje! Nice to see you here again!

I keep doing everything wrong!!! 'Sides I shouldn't have stated that it was an 'A' when clearly it was symbolism. It is a few years since I've been in school!LOL.

I think Gimli didn't carry them because he is short, and couldn't keep their heads above the snow. Seriously, Gimli and Legolas were both strong enough to carry the Hobbits but were not as tall as Boromir and Aragorn.

Legolas not tall?? He's an elf! Of course he's tall enough to carry the hobbits.

Yes, but Aragorn was said to be the tallest of the Fellowship. And he is the one that suggested to Boromir that they carry them.

Why did not Legolas carry? Consider the context.

First there is that talk from Boromir about the strongest seeking a way. Aragorn then agrees, and asks Boromir and himself to make a path. Which they do, while Legolas with a smile goes scouting over the snow instead of trudging in it.

Next Boromir (among a lot of proud bragging of the luck of having Men, doughty Men at that, in the Company) comes with the suggestion that he and Aragorn should carry the Hobbits. Legolas knows fully well that he is equally strong, but he wisely lets Boromir and Aragorn carry out the task since they are so eager to prove themselves.

Boromir obviously knew very little about Elves. My only question is why Aragorn went along with the charade, as he had been enough around Elves to know better? My only answer is that he wanted to bond with Boromir.

When the Fellowship was coming down from Caradhras, Boromir and Aragorn beat a path through the snow for everyone, then came back and carried Merry and Pippin, then came back again and carried Frodo and Sam. Why in the world didn't Legolas, who could walk on top of snow and is an elf and really strong, help carry any of the hobbits?

thats easy, they would have weighed him down.
