Actually, my good president with no apparent teeth, he was

Plenty of Dragons wandering Sussex, you see, despoiling washing lines, and scaring cattle in 900 AD?

Are you suggesting George didn't fight the dragon and that it's just a legend?

He did fight the dragon. I saw him do it three times today, for starters.

(Seriously I did ... at a festival )

900AD? Well, that's maybe an guess based on an average.

It all depends which bit of the George story you're looking at. The actual George probably comes from around 300AD, and was martyred by the Romans for his faith. Then about 200 years later he was canonised. But I believe all the legends about the dragons didn't start until around the 12th century, and it was perhaps a century later that April 23rd was made his day. There are various ideas about what the dragon means ... one of them is that in a misty way through time it was seen as an emblem of the Romans, because they often used dragon flags for their cohorts.

Yes, and the more Christian interpretation (since he is a saint, after all ) is that the dragon represents sin and the devil.

Sure were, if you believe the Roman idea - and maybe even worse

Though as this was the territory of the Atrebates, come the Roman arrival, and as quite a few of them apparently weren't averse to the Romans (having made themselves quite a nice little trade with them even before Claudius' lot turned up), I don't suppose poor old George found much call for dragon fighting there.

Pity he wasn't around a bit earlier, for Boudicca and her Iceni and the Trinovantes. Hah! That'd have sorted the Romans!

(Though, come to think of it, maybe he didn't do so well when he did have his chance ..... )
