Society shouldn't think of it as "distasteful". If McKellen finds a 23 year-old woman who wants to date him despite the fact that he is old and formerly gay (God, can't think of Gandalf as gay ), then McKellen should go for it! Should he dismiss the poor woman because society is less tolerant? Nah, I don't think so...
