As far as I know, Tolkien never gave him a pre-evil name. He must have had one, though.

Why would he need a "pre-evil" name? If I became evil, would I have to change my name? No... I'd just be Ruinel the Evil-Elf, rather than Ruinel the Elf. See? Then if I wanted you NOT to know who I was... I'd change my name... say... to something not connected to my original name. But that's another story.

BTW, it seems you got a suck-@$$ book, if it's got Sauron as an Elf and not Maia. Sheesh!

The question about Istari, Balrogs and Sauron all being Maiar... yes, they are... but just like Valar, they have different strengths.

Because Sauron is Quenya (contrary to most of the Valar's names) and means "the abhorred", a name which doesn't sound like something I would like to be called (which, apparently, is why he banned the use of it).

does it say in lotr that he banned the use of the name Sauron?

I'mjust gonna call him Annatar b/c that is the named he called himself...granted it was only for one purpose but he came up with it

Wrong evil overlord. Morgoth's name was Melkor. We don't know Sauron's. But I agree, he certainly could not have been called Sauron, the Abhorred, back when he was still a normal Maia.

No, that was Morgoth's first name. Feanor named Melkor, Morgoth, after he stole the Silmarils.

Melkor = "he who arises in might"
Morgoth = "the dark enemy"

I do not recall that Sauron had a name prior to the name "Sauron".

Yes, I acknowledged my boo-boo already - I was laughing so hard at the evil overlord list that I mixed up my evil overlords and thought she was asking about Morgoth! Did you read that link? It's hysterical!

That was really a good question, Arien - I had never thought of Sauron having a "pre-evil" name before - I wish now that we knew it, because I like knowing Morgoth's "pre-evil" name.
