I bet they've all gone through the hardest school of them all: the mod-school. To pass your exam you have to:
1) Keeping sane
2) Not spam

That's why there's so few of them

Being a mod isn't especially hard. You often have to read a lot of boring stuff that doesn't interest you, but it's pretty easy. It can get busy.

The way at Entmoot to become a mod is to be a good poster, don't spam, hang around for a while, and don't ask to be a mod. Most of this is explained in the FAQs.
