There's a Buckland in Oxfordshire, halfway between Oxford and Swindon. Drove past it last night, in fact. In fact, the place names round this part of the world clearly influenced his naming of the the Shire. Others include:
Bucklebury, Berkshire Nobottle, Northants Stock, Essex There's a Woodhall somewhere in Scotland, can't remember where, and a Micheldever in Hampshire, which is a bit too close for coincidence. Any other "real" places? |
