I find that there is absolutely no correlation between how faithful a movie is to its source and the actual quality of the film.

The Princess Bride: Good film, not a great adaptation

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: Okay film, but a very close adaptation

The Wizard of Oz: amazing film, but incredibly distant from the source material

Among examples...

Well, the cartoon movie adaption of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh was the worst. The book was actually pretty good, but that movie was seriously the only movie to ever give me actual nightmares. I hated it.

The Time Machine actually wasn't a horrible movie, (IMHO) but it was so far away from the book, I'm surprised they even kept the same title.

Good: Catch-22
Bad: Bladerunner. The movie was better than the book actually.

That's because strictly speaking, a lot of the Mouse House flicks aren't adapting the book, just the conventional legend... an adaptation of the siege of Troy need not credit Homer's Iliad if minimal references are made to specific details in it. Furthermore, everything they adapt is public domain by now.

My personal favourite, Beauty and the Beast comes to mind...
