They get six meals a day.

I'm lucky to squeeze in two.

Well, I suppose BoP COULD be right. I think I read somewhere that their years were longer then ours; like somewhere near 1000 days..... I don't remember the number except that it was alot more than the modern number.

And no, BoP, I am NOT saying I trust you!

An elven yen is close to a 100 years.

But the hobbits based thier calander on a loa- the sun round, which is the same as our year.

However, bilbo was the oldes hobbit ever at 130, so I doubt 150 is the average. I seem to recall 90-100 being generally considered a god time to die.

Of course. Hobbits were Men, so naturally they died in the same time span. Bilbo was the exception, because the Ring gave him a greater life span. Remember though that the life span of men was greater after they came to Beleriand, and Aragorn lived to be something like 210 years old. Not sure.

What do you mean they were Men?!? That would mean Frodo and Strider were BOTH Men...
Could you explain that please?

That is correct. Frodo and Strider were both Men, just not of the same branch or breed. Hobbits were an off shoot of Men. I think Michael Martinez said it best this way: All daisys are flowers, but not all flowers are daisys. Make sense? So, all Hobbits are Men, but not all men are Hobbits.

Yeah, they're a sub-species. Which brings up an interesting question: are there any instances of hobbits and men interbreeding? (I haven't made my way into HoME yet.)

I admire the Hobbits sense of family. They all know they're family history and who's related to who. They're very loyal to family as well. Which kind of reminds me of my own family.

I like the way they are self basting when you roast them.

Must be all that butter under their waistcoats.

I just remembered that little description Tolkien wrote about Hobbits, and how he said they tend to shy away from the Big Folk as they call us. So I doubt there was any interbeeding.

Yeah, I remember that: from the LOTR "concering hobbits" wasn't it? I'm guessing it was possible though, since they were descended from men.

Absolutely possible I would think, but I recall no account of it in the books. I would think considering their makeups, most all the people of Middle-earth were capable of interbreeding.

We know that Men and Elves can interbreed, and since Hobbits are related to Men, then elves and Hobbits could interbreed. That would be an interesting combination. I don't know about dwarves, since they were created separately.

If a male Dwarf interbreeded with a female Elf, and they had a female child, would the child have a beard?

well did female dwarves have beards??

but back to the main topic, the scouring of the shire basically sums up what i admire most about hobbits. They are usually easygoing and peaceful but when someone takes away their 6 meals a day and makes life uncomfortable they aren't afraid to fight!
