Tolkien wrote poems before he ever wrote these books. I like the collection of poems with Alan Lee illustrations! whooo hoooo!

same here (for skipping poems and songs). I usually read the short songs and poems, but the first time I read LotR, I skipped the long ones.

I read the books backwards the 4th time I was reading them (last half first, first half last, for the Fellowship, then last half first, and first half last for TTT, and so on). Everyone thought I was weird (but oh well, I am so...)

I read the first time in order, then i reread my favourite parts, then i read all of the two towers in order and am now almost done with fotr in order. i guess after that rotk. but at the same time i am reading in order i skip around to a chapter i feel like reading. especially evey time i get to helms deep i tend to skip to something else. i liek the songs and poems a lot, but if i read them i can't pay attention unless i read them separate from when i read the story.

The only time i read chapters out of order is when I'm trying to find quotes but then inevitably finding myself reading from that point forward. I recently finished The Hobbit after opening it to pg. 66 and just reading forward.

The first time I read a book, any book, I read it all the way through. After I have read the book, I read sections or chapters and just go from there. So, sometimes I'll skip around one book, read another section from another book and then I may go back to the original book again. Some of the songs and poems I find hard to read because I can't get it right in my head.

I try to read LotR straight through about once a year. It doesn't count if I start in the middle, read to the end, and then go from the beginning to the middle.

I read all the books in order - including the poems. I've read them 12 times.

I used to memorize the poems and write them in a notebook. I did the "Tale of Tinuviel" in caligraphy, as well as some of the other poems.
