I remember it well. I have seen many film grow from screen play to ruinness old age on video. It was the summer of my 18th year. I remember liking it ok at the time. I also remember wishing it was filmed like Star Wars had been.

You absolutely pegged the best part of the pic. Sneakin'. Although the first time Sam says "Oh Mr Froto", the facial expression was excellent. However, I will admit most of the rest of it was somewhat forgettable.

One look at the "cover art" of that RotK cartoon caused me to back away, shaking my head!

You know, same here, ringbearer, one still from the Rankin-Bass and I was turned off. However, now I gotta admit I'm intrigued to see just how horrible it was! [wink!]

"...[The Lord of the Rings] is to exemplify most clearly a recurrent theme: the place in 'world politics' of the unforeseen and unforeseeable acts of will, and deeds of virtue of the apparently small, ungreat, fogotten in the places of the Wise and Great (good as well as evil). A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless." Letters of JRR Tolkien, page 160.
