Well this thread seems to have devolved into The News of The Weird.

Quote:
Officials of Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, initially agreed to host the annual multi-denominational Austin Area Interreligious Ministries Thanksgiving celebration last year, but abruptly canceled when they came to realize that Muslims might actually pray there. Under criticism, the church said that it "hopes" the religious community "will ... be tolerant of our church's beliefs" that necessitated the decision.

The birth of a new country,
Kosovo MPs proclaims independence

Will this event encourage separatists in other countries? Will the Basque nationalist movement awake again? The IRA? The Kurdish PPK?
That's what Russia fears anyway, as they have plenty of separatists problems themselves. Russia is likely to throw a spanner in the works as Kosovo tries to establish autonomy. But then Kosovo has the EU, US and UN on their side...

I know a good number of people here too will be watching Kosovo's further moves to independence and self-reliance. It could have been us, after all, in a worst case scenario.

The potential difference is that Raul has had mild thoughts on change. Not that hes some massive reformer by a long stretch but he DID try to reopen the discussion about trading with the US while he was interim "guy in charge" but Fidel nixed it from his hospital bed. So now he may have more leeway on that kind of thing. Although be assured Fidel will still wield serious power.

Isn't this a bit much? Using a fire extinguisher to put out your girlfriend's cigarette?

You have to wonder why he had a girlfriend at all.

Heterosexuality requires SUCH a lowering of female standards.

"He managed to put out the cigarette though"... it would be really bad if you empty a fire extinguisher on a cigarette and still couldn't put it out...
I do wonder what's behind this story though. There probably was more reason behind it then is written in the paper. I mean: I would get pretty upset if someone would start smoking in my room when I asked several times not to do so, or when I told people that I can't stand the smoke.

EDIT: This was in the Dutch news. Took me some time to find the English version.

Breaking: In one of the greatest political upsets of all time, Raoul Castro has been voted in as President of Cuba.

Pollsters and pundits alike are at a loss to explain this stunning turn of events.

"We didn't expect such a big turn-out of new voters", said one.

"He showed an unexpected level of support among single moms", said another.

Voters on the street were equally surprised. "I supported him, said J.Garcia, "but with the establishment lined up against him, I didn't think he had a chance."

Though no-one could recall the name of his opponent, everyone said that Raoul had been assumed to be a hopeless underdog..

"It just shows that it ain't over till it's over", said R.Martinez, "no matter what the fat cats and talking heads say, the people have the final choice."

Doesn't this sound rather strange? No one knew who the other guy was but they were sure he was going to win? Weird.
