Prior to kick off, I was going for Holland. Good team, good manager (Dutch teams usually self-destruct with infighting but van Basten seems to have them playing for each other) great supporters, and all their games will effectively be home games.

Czech Rep also good. Don't discount the Italians or Spanish either. My dark horses would be Switzerland, Ukraine and Ecuador.

Sweden, a team in decline sadly. Larsson is one of my all-time favourite players but he and Freddie are a bit long in the tooth these days.

It would be great if England win it. At last they will stop going on about 1966. Don't think they will though: lack of depth in squad and lack of fit striker. Coupla yellow cards, coupla German defenders treading on a few metatarsals...

Brazil, yes, course they could win, but I don't think they will. The last time the World Cup was won by a non-European team in Europe was 1958.

OK, so what about a Moot sweepstake? Or we could do the BBC predictor and see who gets the closest prediction..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/shared/...6/default.stm#

I had some delicious second round matches: Eng v Ger, Mex v Arg, Bra v Ita.

Quarter-final predictions: Eng v Hol, Cze v Spa, Ecu v Arg, Bra v Ukr.

Semi-finals: Hol v Cze, Arg v Bra; Holland v Brazil final (yum!)

Hey BB, cross-posted there.

Am fully bedecked. Well, I've got me St Georges Cross bog paper if that's what you mean. In other ways, I always let the wind blow free if you know what I mean.

I'm going against national stereotype and supporting Ingerland. It is much, much easier to do now I don't live there any more. I find the nationalism borders on the xenophobic at such times, and the Scots are just as bad in automatically supporting anyone else apart from England.

You know what makes it easier? The English have finally noticed that the Union Jack isn't the English flag...

and the kilt issue? ... he keeps ignoring the kilt issue!

.. i think we can take it as confirmation that eddie the gaffer's years down on Oxford, England have softened him into a rooney undies wearing scotsman!!!

Larsson heh? you a Celtic fan then Eddy?

Nah we would have Holland i think ... - just kind of game we'd win ...

Yeah a sweepstake sounds great - how do we organise it?

...............

shut up about 66 and all that??

is he mad???

(hope so!!! - i mean that we could start harping on about 2006 already!!!)

best, BB

How about picking a last 8 line-up, last 4, final and winner?

1 point for getting a team in the last 8, 2 for last 4, 4 for each finalist and 8 for the winner?

Entries have to posted on this thread before the start of the end of the second round of group games (2000 BST, Wed).

The winner gets a scratch n sniff photo up the Gaffer's kilt. Second prize is TWO scratch n sniff photos up the Gaffer's kilt etc etc

I bet Australia and Croatia will go up to Second Round and Brazil won't. Or rather I hope... we'll see how possible this is tomorrow in the game Croatia-Brazil.

Hiddink seems to be a genious! Australia actually won in the World Cup!! Go Australia!

btw, do you see the symmetry in the winners of the World Cups?
'62- Brazil
'66- England
'70- Brazil
'74- Germany
'78- Argentina
'82- Italy - the center
'86- Argentina
'90- Germany
'94- Brazil
'98- France
'02- Brazil
By that the next champion would be Brazil. :P (winner of 1958)

logic heh?

funny old game logic ....

logic? ..on me head son!

so ... lets get this straight then ...

'62- Brazil (south american ... = SA)
'66- England (European ..allegedly! ... = EU)
'70- Brazil = SA
'74- Germany = EU
'78- Argentina = SA
'82- Italy - = EU
'86- Argentina = SA
'90- Germany = EU
'94- Brazil = SA
'98- France = EU
'02- Brazil = SA

...

'06 ... = SA??? ???
surely you mean = EU

Logic heh!!!!

one day Africa will enter that hallowed list too ... but not this time me thinks ...

best all, BB

Excellent logic, my dear BB, and those of an informed persuasion will note that the continent the tournament was held in always coincides with the winning country (except 2002, in Asia, which I guess counts as neutral territory). Hence my guess t'will be a European winner. Can't be Ingerland, because that would just be weird; nor Germany, because they are pish; nor France, Italy, Spain because they are not good enough. So that just leaves Holland and Czech Republic of the credible contenders.

QED.

Some top hacking in tonight's game. Is Essien the dirtiest player in the tournament?

*hangs head* Well, there's always 2010. Here I was all ready to show the world that 2002 wasn't a fluke, and what do we do? Get thoroughly trounced.

I guess I should get my St. George and bright orange avatars ready, eh? (Not quite yet though, I still have a bit of faith. )

Come on USA!

Apparently it's not as bad as it first looked, which is good news for the Czech's. I think with him in the side and Rosicky (what a buy for Arsenal) and Nedved playing as they were yesterday, the Czech's could beat the Italiens.

Brazil won. Frankly, even though I didn't want them to win I expected them to play well... I'm truly disappointed from their performance, I doubt they can take the World Cup, and I hope Australia will beat them next week.
