"Come on! Fight your father!"

Has anyone here ever celebrated festivus for real? I think I saw a website once where a group of Seinfeld fans actually did it and took some photos. All my friends love Seinfeld so maybe we'll do it this year too

Ah...Guy Fawkes Day. I remember learning about that when we read TS Eliot's poem "Hollow Men" in 11 English.

We spent a long time on that poem...partly because of the "Mistah Kurtz-he dead" and "A penny for the Old Guy" (Guy Fawkes) opening. We were basically taught all of Heart of Darkness possible without actually reading it [for the first line], and basics about Guy Fawkes [for the second].

I miss having that English teacher

Sorry . I was replying to sun-star & Bombadillo's posts. I'm still not sure what this thread is exactly about.

Your thread totally rocks Spock. I have an inspiration tangential to Festivus - I want to celebrate a holiday that isn't normally part of my traditions. The most obvious to me is St. Luceia (sp?), on December 13th. I should do some research, but I think it's about faith that light will return even though the nights are very long. (And in Northern Sweden, they are indeed long.)
I could do some research and learn how to make whatever food is involved. Too bad Dec. 13th is the eve of my double-header of finals (after having had a similar double-header the previous week).
I need a holiday that takes place in the summer. Help me out here guys. I want one that I can celebrate properly.
Because I really want to do this now! I'm serious about this. I'm not going to do a half-assed job of whatever holiday I celebrate. I'll respect the culture and/or religion involved (I wouldn't pick a religious holiday where it wasn't cool for a non-member of said religion to celebrate it).
I also want food to be involved, since I'm a good cook and it's something I can relate to.
In sum: anyone know of a holiday that occurs between May and August, where food is involved?

Well she is the patron saint of the Blind, so I don't know if that's appropriate for what you are seeking.

There is Corpus Christi, which is "the body of God" and is usually celebrated with 'spiritual food'. It rotates according to moon cycles or some such, and is usually in June.

That's such a great idea! How about Whitsun in May or Lammas in August? You might have to make up your own special food, but they're both traditionally great days of feasting.

Well there's always 10% who don't read post # 1 on a thread. Do so.

What is Festivus? A fictional holiday?

Festivus is a holiday invented on the show Seinfeld. It is completely fictional but hilarious in it's envolvements...things like The Airing of the Grievences and the Feats of Strength.

I thought it was a book first, and then it was on Sienfeld.

Even though it's a made-up holiday (aren't they all? ) people do celebrate it. Festivus does seem to be a light-hearted send up of Christmas though.
(see the Airing of Greivances and the Festivus Pole)

Thanks for the suggestions Sun-star and Spock! I'll look into those.

...remember Christmas is a fictional holiday started by The Church to stamp out the pagan winter festivals. Jesus was born in the spring by biblical accounts but there wasn't any major pagan holiday there to wipe out so they moved it back.

I for one could really care less when the put up the lights...they're pretty and look wonderful reflecting in the snow, which we have a lot of here in New York.....

Yes NYC is probably my favorite city to wander through at Christmas time; albeit heavily armed. No other city in the world has the "feeling" of NY at Christmas. May it be peaceful for a long time.
