As Eärniel pointed out, ethanol is only one type of alcohol. However, it is the only alcohol we can drink. Stay away from methanol! It may look and taste like ordinary alcohol but it'll make you blind  Ethanol isn't always made by fermentation of sugars. Industrial ethanol can be made by letting ethene gas react with water. However, natural ethanol comes from yeast cells (a kind of fungus). The cells get energy by cleaving sugars into ethanol and carbondioxide. In wine, the sugars of the grapes are converted into alcohol while the juices give flavour. An interesting note - it is impossible to make a drink that is 100% alcohol. Well first of all the yeast cells die if the concentration of ethanol gets too high. Then, if you try to make alcohol yourself (in a lab or something) some of the alcohol will always turn into water. This is due to the chemical properties of the substance. At best, you can make like 99.5% pure ethanol but there will always be a tiny bit of water in the solution  Enough ranting now, I was just excited to see chemistry being discussed

If you don't like chemistry, I could switch to toxicology if you'd like. Talking about the biological and chemical effects of alcohol on a human body ect. It could include interesting therms like cirrhosis and necrosis.
 I think it's obvious I'm not a big drinker of alcholic beverages...

Since Anduril was so nice to show me his vineyard in South Africa, which I really appreciated - note the word "appreciate" being used here, folks, indicating this is a thread where we can "appreciate" wine rather than relentlessly dog it

South African Chardonnay to try - I've had it, it's phenomenal. Snowdog, this is a beautiful one to start with. Rather pricey, but oh, so worth it.
1} Vergelegen Chardonnay Reserve 2002 This wine is coloured a sort of lemon yellow, with butterscotch, citrus, vanilla, tropical fruit and mineral tones. Complex, powerful yet still elegant. Not cloying, not pretentious, and not too oaky or overly dry. Yum.
