Hitchcock:
Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much were both really good.

Hitchcock is good; I also liked the old Julius Caesar (based on Shakespeare's work of the same name, and very accurate I believe [hear that PJ?]). As for comedy, Court Jester was a great comedy, as was the Inspector General (Danny Kaye is funny ). But I think my all-time fave comedy would be Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Forum. That was HILARIOUS!!!

Way too many to name, but I like a lot of what's already been posted. I'll just cheat and name a few favorite directors: Hitchcock, Bergman (just saw The Seventh Seal again, ooooh...), Fellini, Kurosawa, Preston Sturges.

And then there are all the Laurel and Hardy films, and anything with Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. I loved the Lavender Hill Mob (hurrah for Alec Guiness!). Anyone a fan of William Powell and Myrna Loy in the Nick and Nora Charles "Thin Man" movies? Liked the ones best without the kid, when they only had Asta, their dog.

My favorite Jimmy Stewart movie would be The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I can watch it over and over, even though I'm not a John Wayne fan.

Ben Hur, 12 Angry Men, Inherit the Wind (Gene Kelly is great!) and even though it's not a "good" movie, I really like The Countess of Monte Cristo

speaking of Doris Day, does anyone else here like "April in Paris"?

And James Stewart was in "Vertigo" too... and by coincidence I was killing some time on the South Bank in London last week and went to the Salvador Dali exhibition in County Hall - and there was the huge eyeball canvas he painted for the nightmare sequence in "Vertigo"

And yes of COURSE "Some Like it Hot", that should have been on my original list! Silly me.

And I'm not that keen on John Wayne either - except in "True Grit"

both

I still like Philia's avitar. It is so cool. I love the movie it comes from. For those of you who don't know it is a picture of Claudia, a girl who was made a vampire by these two vampires who knew she would die of the plauge most likely if they didn't make her one. Sadly, she is killed close to the end of the movie which, if anyone is interested is called Interview With a Vampire.
