In Roman mythology, the Horatii were a set of male triplets from Rome. During a war between Rome and Alba Longa during the reign of Tullus Hostilius (approx. 672-642 B.C.), it was agreed that settlement of the war would depend on the outcome of a battle between the Horatii and the Curiatii. The Curiatii were a set of male triplets who were from Alba Longa and of the same age as the Horatii. In the battle, the three Curiatii were wounded, but two of the Horatii were killed. The last of the Horatii turned to flee. The Curiatii chased him, but because they were wounded became spread out from one another, which allowed the Horatius to slay them one by one. When the victorious Horatius returned carrying the spoils of victory, his sister cried out in grief because she realized the Curiatius she had been engaged to was dead. The Horatius killed his sister, proclaiming, "So perish any Roman woman who mourns the enemy." For the murder, he was condemned to death but was saved when he appealed to the people. The legend might have been used as the reason why the condemned in Rome were allowed to appeal to the populace. |

Shah, you're damn good at this! And, Lilaenwen, thanx 4 the wikipedia reference!
O.K., here's a new one, then I have to get offline for a while. I have SUCH a busy next couple of days ahead of me, I won't be able to moot so much for a spell, but I'll leave you all with a new painting to muse upon:

Magritte's Carte Blanche, I believe. Not a fan of his, I'm afraid, though I always found his The Treason of Images (This is Not a Pipe) highly amusing.

Yes, Hasty Ent! Would you care to post a pic for us to guess? I'm waiting to see if Shah wants to, as well.

Gah! I remember that thing! Its like, "Birds in flight In Space" Or something strange like that. The dude who imported it was charged with a fine, because people thought it was "a medical instrument" of some kind. (when importing art, its free, because they want to spread it around, but anything else is with a tax, depending on what it is)...
Personally, I dont find anything inspiring about it....*searches for a good picture*

This is a very easy one, but I went to see it...Pretty cool, adn it has played a part in many other classical images...

Hellenistic fan? eh? I'll let someone else get this one....
My own tastes are pretty broad, but there are a few periods I loathe... I may respect the work produced then, and understand its significance within the canon, but that doesn't mean I like it. btw... don't loathe Hellenistic sculpture at all... quite like it, in fact |

I've known that sculpture for over 20 years, ever since I saw it in an art history class. :P
I want to give someone else a chance to guess though. I work in the arts, so it's not really fair for me to be taking part in this game. Last edited by Hasty Ent : 10-13-2005 at 02:28 PM. |

Dangit, I know what the story behind the sculpture is, but I have no idea who carved it or what it's called.

Well, if you know the story, the name will pop up. Think about it....

I think the sculpture is called Laocoon and his children or Laocoon and the sea-serpent or something like that... (or was Laocoon the serpent's name? ) Anyway, I have no idea as to the sculptor
EDIT: Great thread btw. Last edited by Beren3000 : 10-15-2005 at 12:08 PM. |

Yes, Beren3000, you're correct -- Laocoön and His Sons was sculpted by Athanadoros, Hagesandros, and Polydoros of Rhodes in the early 1st century. It's your turn to post something.
some info on Laocoon here: http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm//...n/laocoon.html Quote:

I don't know if it's technically my turn to post since I didn't guess the sculptor.
However, here's my contribution just in case |
