Love your organization!
I can just skip Movie 9 and there will be nothing I dislike about the whole thing! So nice and neatly done.

Big battle, Beren and Luthien, probably some nudity, there. Earendil sails, goes back to kick some ass, roll credits as Sauron takes ship, escaping. Camera pulls back and it's Iluvatar who's been narrating the story, use really old hands to close the book.

What do you mean, "WHere's Feanor?" He has to make the jewels, doesn't he? The jewels are the story.
I figure we introduce him, like, playing with sand on a beach. The pebbles there give him the idea, then he goes off to this place like Superman's palace of ice to make them.

I can't stand Túrin. Yes, I've forced myself to read it, both in the Silm and the longer version, but I just can't stomach the guy.

What makes the Turin story worthwhile, to me, is Hurin and Morwen. I can't stand Turin and his string of boneheaded decisions, either. Of course, he was practically raised by the biggest 'tard in Middle Earth, Thingol, so I guess it's to be expected he'll do dumb things.
But Hurin is maybe my favorite Man in the Professor's entire works. He holds the story of Turin together like bookends.

I almost gave up on the Silmarillion when I got to that chapter. It was so long, and everything about Túrin was so distasteful to me...
When it comes to Húrin and Morwen, well, they're okay, but they're barely in it. The story's about Túrin! And am I really supposed to like a guy who spends all his time whining and feeling sorry for himself, giving himself these emo names like "The Wronged" etc., when he has brought every bit of his misery and suffering on himself? I honestly don't think 'fate' has anything to do with it. My understanding of texts such as The Athrabeth and various other parts of HoME is that Men aren't even entirely subject to 'fate'. Seriously, if Túrin had just gone home and told Thingol everything that happened (or gone home one of the million times that Beleg begged him to) nothing bad would have happened to him. Beleg would still be alive, and he wouldn't have slept with his sister. He reminds me too much of a stubborn emo kid who would rather feel sorry for himself than take responsibility for his actions.

I know you're going to think I'm baiting you, Curufin, but honestly I'm not. I always felt Turin was the human counterpart to Feanor. The great flawed orphan of his race. Destroyed by hubris. Lots of parallels there.
As for fate, it isn't fate in general that is Turin's problem, it is the curse of Morgoth specifically on him and his family. But I agree he could have broken the curse if he had been less of a dope. You can't work in Eru's despite, but one would think defying Morgoth is possible if you're acting nobly.

DPR - I see the parallels, but for me, the difference is that while Fëanor certainly has pride and hubris aplenty, he takes responsibility for his actions. He never accuses the Valar of not being 'fair' when they banish him and his family. Or when they banish him to Formenos, for that matter. He defies them, yes, but he takes total responsibility for his own actions.
Túrin, after ruthlessly murdering someone in the woods, doesn't see why he should even have to apologize. And then he runs away (cowardly!) and goes and hides in the woods so that he doesn't have to. He wants them to apologize to him because he killed someone! What a tool.

Well, he betrayed Gondolin, didn't he? He started a fight that wiped out the Haladad and he spread cursed gold all over. If you're going to criticise bad decisions, I'd think some of those would make your list.

I'm not aware of Hurin doing any of those things. Could you be more specific?

And despite the fact that he didn't 'ruthlessly murder' Saeros, he was cruel to him. Fëanor was violent, and often ruthless, but never cruel. He never tortured or belittled anyone. Túrin did.

Hmm. I rather like what Turin did to Saeros.
There are some Elves I would have liked to see treated in a similar way... |
