Re: (You called him Jeffrey)
I personally think the politics should be kept out of this.
It's just the bloody Olympics. And China's a beautiful country. Do conflicting ideologies have to get in the way of an otherwise harmonious international summit of athletes? |

Re: (You called him Jeffrey)
IP, do you have any idea what the situation in China is? If they weren't responsible for producing everything we probably would have gone to war with them by now. Their human rights issues are just as bad, if not worse, then those in the times of the Colloseum and ancient Christian persecution.

Re: (You called him Jeffrey)
Ah, yes I think I recall from World History that there are other countries. However, most that were competeing for the games have a better record of stability and human rights than China does. As to beauty, most countries are beautiful somewhere, if only from 30,000ft up. China is no exception. The polotion in Beijing is reminicent of London circa Jack the Ripper. And the transportation is worse than colonial India.

But with all the attention coming from the rest of the world China would be under a lot of preassure to improve their government. Though, I don't think government should be brought into the reason for choosing a country to host the games.

Really? You don't think that the fact that Christan's are imprisoned and killed for their beliefs shoud effect the choice? That can't be right!

Re: (You called him Jeffrey)
Berlin hosted the games during Hitler's reign. Obviously China might start WWIII like Germany started WWII after they hosted the games. Continue conversation at the link in my sig.

IronParrot...
I don't think the Olympics should be held in a country where easily over half of the athletes would normally be arrested on the spot and shipped off to labour camps if they weren't defended by their home country.

Re: IronParrot...
So, you're saying we should cut them off from the rest of the world because we disagree with their government? Gee, that will work for sure... Anyways, its protesters want this because it will draw more attention to China's corruptness corruptness.

They can have a big-C Communist government.
That's their concern, not ours.
But like I said, the situation there is to the point where half of the athletes there would be one step from a labour camp - and yes, that is my professional opinion. You can quote me on that. |

I agree with JL (for probably the first and last time ). Anyone who has any idea what the situation there is should either be outraged or is inhuman.

Re: They can have a big-C Communist government.
The Dragon and the Bear, I believe is the name of the book. Frightening....good read. Indeed WW111 could come after the games and they would start it.
They've been pushing the envelope of infulence in the Philippines and other places and they really do have a totally different mind set and principles than Western peoples. Remember they are "the middle Kingdom" and feel justified in all their acts.                 Of course we could just nuke 'em and have 'em served stir fired. . |

"Remember they are 'the middle Kingdom' and feel justified in all their acts"
was followed by: "Of course we could just nuke 'em and have 'em served stir fired" How ironic! |

Re: They can have a big-C Communist government.
I'm not at all outraged for the Olympics being held in China. Indeed China has huge neglect for human rights and the freedom of speech and I do not deny it. Yet I want to remind you that China must be the leading socialist country in human rights (compared to let's say, North-Korea) and in privatization (China has more capitalized industry [90%] Russia).
Personally, I think China's going towards a better direction and Olympics being held there might even improve things. Whether that I think so, makes me inhuman, I'm not sure. |
