Learn to read music on the guitar. I had played for a long time, but when I started reading music for guitar I improved drastically. Since you're already a musician, Starr Polish, you'll just have to transfer your music reading skills to the new instrument. The guitar can be wacky because there are often multiple places to play a given note. Also, the guitar sounds an octave lower than written. (Guitar music should probably be written on the tenor clef - which is just an octave lower than treble clef - to be completely accurate.)

I suggest the first thing you do, is learn to read tabs. Once you can read tabs, you can look around on the internet (tabcrawler.com and mxtabs.com) for easy songs of artists you like. This'll keep you entertained while you suck The next thing, is learn to play power-chords (A5 and E5 seem to be the most common), and barre chords. If you can play power-chords good, you can play most any punk-rock song written, and a good majority of rock songs (or at least a decent-sounding version of them). I can only assume its normal for your fingers to bleed when your still new, so make sure to wipe the blood of the guitar

On another note, i find acoustic easier to play =\ But since you have an accoustic (and i assume your all the hippie tolkienish oasis lover types) learn stuff off of "whats the story morning glory" by oasis. Loads of great acoustic stuff on there, good way to learn about capos too

Thats enough rambling from me.

*sniffle*

I clipped my semi-long nails on my left hand today, since they were getting in the way of fretting (is that what it's called? LOL) They haven't been this short in YEARS!

I also kind of screwed around, trying to at least tune the G string, which was the worst. I am incredibly afraid the string is going to snap (that's what watching The Haunting gives you, stupid string snapping paranoia). My father had to use an electric guitar string since he didn't have any acoustic ones (the original G was in terrible shape). I think I at least tuned it to be in tune with the rest of the guitar.

Ah! I hate snapping strings! I've been hit by an E-string with a bad ball-end WAY too many times. Now I put a towel over my guitar when I change the strings . . . but I still wince when I tune it up again.

If your strings are really old, you should replace them all anyways. they won't break or snap as much, but if your playing with really old strings.. watch out Its also generally a good idea to replace all the strings at once, rather than just one at a time =\

Okay, now I'm really scared to tune my guitar ::whimper:: Well, they haven't been played much, if at all...and we have no acoustic strings ::whimpers again::

As long as the guitar is pointed away from you and not at your face, you should be fine Most of the time snapped strings won't even hit you..

Haha

Girly men who play guitars are cool. Double if it's a 12 string.
I gotta play my guitar sometime. It's been so long I've left it. I think it's getting lonely.
