I agree it would help to read The Silmarillion first, but if you just wanted more information on the Istari, the palantiri, Gandalf's meetings with Thorin, the Nazgul and the Rohirrim from TLOTR, then you don't need to read the Sil.

Ipersonally enjoyed the non-first age stories the best-none of which require the silm preparation. I like Turin's story, but I'm not one for tragedies. As for the beautiful "Tuor Comes to Gondolin" knowledge of the Sllm is nice-but you could enjoy on its own.

They're (Gondolin, and Turin) more lengthier than the sil versions, so it is possible to start with those ones. However, bear in mind that they are unfinished. (duh.)

While Turin's a little harder to read (since the gaps are filled by the sil) but Tuor's tale just ends before it could have.
