Just consider it to be welfare assistance. We just feel sorry for you having to be neighbors with the world leader - we just want you to be a part of it all and enjoy some of the glory.

And we wouldn't force you right now - the last time we attacked your country - was in the War of 1812. Although - it has been revealed that in the early 1900's there were battle plans to invade Canada.

So what do Norwegians do on Consitution Day. For 4th of July we have fireworks and picnics and stuff. I go to Liberty State Park and watch New Jersey's fireworks with NYC as the backdrop. And I take the ferry over to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. I've done that for the past two years and I've made it a tradition.

We hardly ever resort to violence to get our way - other wise France and Germany would have seen our tanks rolling down their streets back in February and March.

The Canadian Dollar would be replaced with the US Dollar. The Canadian dollar is weak compared to the US Dollar. Hopefully the Euro doesn't replace the US Dollar as the world's currency.

My god...Every tv programme today have Norwegians in them. Norwegians in the news, Norwegian artists, even Norwegian weather men

There are children's parades all over the country, led by brass musicians. In Oslo the children's parade is passing the Royal Castle, where the Royal Family is standing on the balcony waving to the crowd. Everyone is wearing their finest clothes, many have National Costumes, and there are flags everywhere. We sing the National Anthem together. In the afternoon there's usually arrangements for the children, with competitions, games and other fun stuff. And lots of icecream, balloons and hot dogs for all.

There are some very nice pictures here, from this years celebration. Click on the pic that says "17. mai i Norge."

4th of July in USA sounds nice too.

Calm down Jonathan, it's only one day a year.

I'd love to see '17:e mai' twice a year or more . I like watching all those Norwegian wearing their national costumes. It's also fun to listen to the language, Norwegian sounds so cute .
In the summers, I use to watch Norwegian television so I get to hear the language quite much. Jeg er ikke fra Norge men jeg liker norsk best

BTW, Artanis and Falagar! See my new avatar?

WOW! I love your new avatar! And your norwegian is superb.

After all, we're all Vikings, aren't we.

I love your new avatar. Sadly it reminds me of this horror movie - but I can't remember the name of it. This guy goes into people's apartments and he somehow paints himself the same color as his surroundings - so you really can't see him.

Artanis - sadly most Americans don't remember what 4th of July is all about. Of course it's far more patriotic on the east coast - since we're the states who fought for independence. Philadelphia is very very busy on the 4th. I wouldn't go there during then.

Officially we declared our independence July 2nd though and that's what the Founding Fathers thought would be the celebration date. But the Declaration of Independece had to go to the printers, was signed on the 4th of July (only two people officially signed it on this date I think - one being John Hancock to officially approve it) and wasn't officially read out loud to the public until July 8th - where it was also read outloud in Trenton NJ. We had a huge celebration in 2001 - because it was the 225th anniversary.

Chronology Of Events: June 7, 1776 to January 18, 1777
The Declaration of Independence: When in the Course of Human Events...

Time for bed. Thanks to everyone who have shared this day with Falagar and me.
Thanks also to the mods for not closing the thread.

And thanks for the links, JD. My scarce knowledge of American history has been increased just a little.

They wouldn't close this thread. There are usually Merry Christmand, Happy ne Year, Happy Passover, Happy Easter, Happy 4th of July, etc threads.

Thanks for the information on Norway. As I told Jonathan - I know pretty much nothing about the Scandanavian countries - except the Vikings.

Although - I do really like Norway at EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World. They have a water ride that take you through the history of Norway (the abridged abridged version). It like the North Seas part of the ride the best.

So - I'm sure your knowledge of American history is much better than my Norwegian history knowledge.

Yes, the Swedes often have some difficulties understanding spoken Norwegian. But that's nothing compared to how hard it is to understand Danish
The Norwegians seem to understand the Swedes better than we understand the Norwegians.

True. The Danes are very difficult to understand. They don't articulate! No problem with Swedish, except you say 'rar' when you mean 'snäll'.

BTW, Falagar, Silje is lurking here now and then, I think, but she doesn't post.

Yes, I noticed that. I PMed her a while ago, it turned out that she is member of another (norwegian) board, which I also am member of, where she spends most of her time.

But she should post in our constitution-thread
