Didn't read the article, but saw a web headline that indicates the FCC is going to investigate the 'flash'

(edit: if this helps put it in perspective, I heard some radio commentators talking about how much trouble they can get in for just saying something they're not supposed to... and what happened at halftime was visual and broadcast worldwide! We all thought we were watching a football game, but got a peepshow. It's one thing if you watch a peepshow intentionally - quite another when it invades anything else you happen to want to watch.) Me and the BF were discussing this yesterday - well, not the Jackson flash, but the whole female nipple thing. It's odd - you can wear a shirt, with no bra, and show the whole cold-nipple thing, no problems. I used to do this all the time in my school uniform - even wearing a bra, you could still see the erect nipples thing, and not frickin' surprising, cos they used to make us wear skirts in the middle of winter!!! Okay, males, are you still with me?? *pokes I-Rex* Okay, so I can wear a shirt, sans bra, and as long as you can't see the colour of my nipples, it's okay? It doesn't matter with the whole erect thing, right? Oftentimes, it can't be helped anyway, sometimes even WITH a bra. Now let me get this straight - male nipples are perfectly alright to be bared in public? So: to reiterate, erect nipples are okay, but if you an see the colour of them, it is considered indecent... but it's okay to flash male nipples. You now, this modesty thing is confusing!
Oh, and wasn't Janet actually wearing something over her nipple. What's the big frickin' deal?

1. Each society has standards of decency - and what was shown was considered not fit for public display in our culture. Not that it's a horrible thing it isn't, but it's a private thing. 2. There's the whole 'shirt ripped off by male' thing here too... is this the message we want to give our young males and females about appropriate male-female behavior? I'm glad my own son wasn't in the room at the time. Many parents weren't so lucky. 3. If this is what I'm to expect anytime I watch a Superbowl, or other major sporting event, or anytime I turn on the TV at all, I simply will not watch. If there are enough like me, the big deal becomes a matter of dollars. |

Fair enough comment on the ripping shirt thing, Val.
I'm just a bit confused, because aren't these the same nipples we use to breastfeed children with? I'm guess I'm just questioning the logic of being modest about boobs. I guess I'm just not too concerned with the idea of seeing women expose boobs, because I don't quite understand why they're supposed to be so rude. Male nipples = okay female nipples = not? Ah what do I know? I wouldn't know modesty if it bit me in the face. ::shrug::

i had my kids in the room too... 1, 5 and 9... i didn't have a problem with it... in fact, we kind of had a chuckle
we're pretty open with them about that sort of stuff... i think these days with the internet and the way tv has changed you have to be... it's different than it was when i was a child, but things change... there was a time in history when a woman bearing any part of her leg at all was seen as indecent many european countries are much more open about this sort of thing and i don't think their society is any worse because of it

As for the halftime show - there was a very strong sexual element to the whole thing. Even other parts of the show - and with other performers. Female backups singing that it was so hot they wanted to take their clothes off, the obligatory crotch-grabbing (gotta make sure it's still attached, one would suppose). The Timberlake-Jackson episode was the most flagrant offense, but not the only one. Last edited by Valandil : 02-02-2004 at 04:27 PM. |

ok allow me to speak as one of the least puratin most sexually dispicable here. Believe it or not the whole thing disgusted me. Why? Because it was a great FOOTBALL GAME. And now all Im hearing about is oooh did you see Janet's nipples??? Oh my god who cares. Did you see the $@%&^ game??? I hate half time shows as a rule and I didnt even watch this one so I wasnt really surprised about this pathetic display of pop sleaze. Anything for publicity. Thats what our culture is all about. Going topless on some snoop dog late night commercial is one thing but showing it off when you think yer watching a football game is just pathetic to me. Get a freaking ticket to Vegas if you want to be trashy I got a superbowl to watch. I mean some people have no class. Anyway, back to bops nipples...

As soon as we saw the LAME horse fart commercial, we started switching to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" when the actual game wasn't on. I have no problem with human bodies, but apparently much of the mentality of the commercials and halftime show was crass, and LOW. I'm trying to uplift my young son from toilet humor and confusing sexual messages....so I'll pass on this spoonfed culture. It's like the Britney Madonna kiss....."Oh what shocking thing can we do next to get attention?" yawn.... The best part of the whole thing was the game ....and I don't even like football. The refs weren't so absent either!

First, after reviewing a picture of the incident (which I shouldn't link to here) for, uh, er....to see what that thing was on her nippler...I have concluded it was some kind of piercing, definately not a "pastie".
Second, the fact that MTV will no longer do the halftime shows is a great thing and well worth all this mumbo jumbo. I will never have to put up with an MTV halftime show again! |

OK, Jackson-bashing aside ( ), I agree with I-Rex... it ended up being a very good game! I was afraid for awhile it would end up in a 0-0 tie, and that New England had blown a couple chances to win it missing those two early field goals. Then there was a min-explosion of scoring to end the half, followed by a scoreless third quarter... but the fourth quarter was actually the highest scoring of any Superbowl! Wow! Plus, all the twists and turns... the nice runs at unexpected times, the long-bomb pass completions, Carolina's decisions to go for 2 twice - and not making it, New England making the 2 point conversion when they tried. Carolina putting together yet one more scoring drive to tie it up late in the game, followed by a bad kick to put New England in position to get the win... Whew! If the Patriots had not broken the tie, it would have been the first ever Superbowl to go into overtime.

This is rather a late comment, but I've been thinking about the Janet incident ("wardrobe malfuntion"?! LOL! ), and my view is that what Janet did was basically a rape. Not on the same "intensity" level as what is usually referred to as rape, but in the same league, because IMO, a rape is a sexual act forced on someone that doesn't want it, by a person with power.
Clearly, a woman's breast is very sexual - people can talk about male and female nipples being the same all they want to, but it only takes a simple common sense observation to see they're NOT considered to be the same by the vast majority of people. (and they're sure not the same functionally - just ask a hungry baby! ) Now there are many men out there who have a healthy libido and have CHOSEN to share ALL their sexuality ONLY with their wives (which is the best way, IMHO - "undiluted" and powerful). Note - CHOSEN. This includes DECISIONS to not seek out pornography, etc. And it is reasonable for these men to think that a football game would NOT include images of a woman's bare breast. So Janet, IMO, has "raped" them - IOW, with her power, she had control over her actions that were broadcast live across the nation, and gave NO indication that this was going to happen, and FORCED it upon people who have CHOSEN to not see images like that. This was a flagrant offense against those people whose beliefs include such a high regard for sex that they treasure it and save it for the one person that they have chosen to spend their lives with. And it was even a worse offense against the kids watching - again, a FORCING of a sexual act, by a person with POWER, upon those who did NOT choose it.

Over here the pict of Janet's breast has appeared in all newspapers, even though nobody cares about (american) football in Spain. This is absurd

This topic is fun to discuss because everyone is making such a big deal out of it, but I'm personally not concerned about it. Deciding the importance of various parts of the human body is completely cultural.
