I think the Elves left Middle-earth because of their rings. The rings, I think, were created to slow down their time or keep them immortal, or something like that. When the Ring fell into Mount Doom and was destroyed, the Elven rings lost their power because I think their power ran on the power of the One Ring (wow, lots of use of the word "power" in one sentence, eh?) Or something like that. I'm not an expert on Elves, period.
