I've always liked the name given to Tom Bombadil by the Elves. Blasphemy! Some of Aragorn's names have been left out
Here are all of them, as I know them anyway Aragorn Telcontar (the name of his royal house, it means "Strider" in Elvish) Elessar The Elfstone Estel Hope Strider Thorongil Wingfoot Envinyatar (meaning "The Renewer") The Renewer (see above) Chieftain of the Dúnedain Dúnadan King of the West Of course some of those are titles, but some of those titles he was referred to as in a name form as well. My favorite names of his are, Elessar and Thorongil. They are my favorites, then probably followed by Aragorn and Telcontar.

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.' 'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin "Oh. I seem to recall that somewhere in LOTR Aragorn gives a name recital something like "I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, Elessar, Isildur's Heir." So I think "Isildur's Heir" would also be one of his names (Wow, think of the size of the tombstone, or whatever, in Rath Dinen for all his appelations!).

I don't know where Banazir is from, but apparently Banakil was an early name for hobbits, used by men after the first millenium of the Third Age.
I like Niniel (Tear Maiden) which Turin names his sister Nienor when they meet again. Henneth Annun instead of the Window of the West, where Faramir and his rangers camp. Any of the Dwarven names: Zirak-zigil instead of Celebdil or Silvertine, Khazad-dum instead of Moria or Dwarrowdelf, Kibil-nala instead of the Silverlode (I think!) and so on. They've got a lovely feel to them. I like the name Mithrandir for Gandalf, but is 'the Grey Pilgrim' entirely correct after he becomes Gandalf the White?

I'll stick to the more known characters for now...
Gandalf - Mithrandir (both the Elves (my favorite culture) and Faramir (my favorite character) call him that...cool!) Aragorn - Estel (I like the meaning...hope), though "the Dunadan" is a close second

Great bump!!
I love Elentári Tintallë, these two of Varda's names. For Gandalf, Olórin, and Incánus. (Wonder what business he had in the south?) As for Aragorn, his Sindarin name-variation Aragorn Arathornion Edhelharn (son of Aragorn, the Elfstone).

Here's a list of mine:
Gandolf- Mithandir........ Faramir called him that so it's good enough for me Aragorn- Srtrider......when the hobbits first meet him and he's the mysterious ranger Sam- Samwise the Brave.....he truly is Gollum- Smeagol.... poor Smeagol Sarumon- Corumo..... Saruman just sounds to much like Sauron Moria- Khazad-Dum...sounds good considering what happened to Gandolf there Weathertop-Amon Sul....just a cool name

My favourite name for Gandalf is probably Mithrandir as it's what the Dunedain called him - I don't feel the Dwarvish name of 'Tharkun' really fits his wizard exterior, somehow. As for Aragorn, I prefer his rugged, ranger name, 'Strider' which, as mentioned previously in this thread, was used most commonly in the Fellowship of the Ring. Drew |

Aragorn
Estel Elessar Arathornson-which means son of Arathorn, or Arathornion in high elvish, which also mean scion of Arathorn. Erienion-which means scion of kings or son of kings. Eldarion-son of or scion of the Eldar. Thus my name, the Telcontarion-the son of or the scion of the striders.

Gandalf
Mithrandir seems more noble and a better representation of one side of Gandalf's character. But simple 'Gandalf' sure sums up his persona as understood by the Hobbits. Tolkien was a clever son-of-a-gun.
