Cotton Mather was an early American colonial, settler, writer, philosopher, preacher... I believe he was a generation or two before Franklin... say late 17th cent or so... and I think from a New England state (our states in our NE corner... anything north and east of New York), probably Massachusetts. Don't remember a whole lot about him... but DO remember that Franklin borrowed much from his writings.

Sweden is CET exactly, which is GMT + 1, which is exactly the same as UTC + 1, which corresponds to EST + 6, which also corresponds to PST + 9, meaning it's 9 pm when it's noon in California. We have DST.
[edit] If you're completely ignorant about your timezone, go to The World Clock

whew, I think I'll just ignore the DST part - too confusing. I had no idea that it was as common as it is!
JD - I had relatives in Indiana, and it was frustrating that they didn't switch - we would always end up calling them after they were asleep when the time switched over! Good theory about why the Americans say the month first, Val. I never thought about why we did that. The Brit/European way makes more sense. If someone asks us the date, we always say the month first.

My timezone is Eastern Standard, (upstate New York) soon to be (April 3rd) Eastern Daylight. I don't know why people have a hard time adjusting. I just change my watch and alarm clock before I go to sleep. I'd probably see things differently if I had to change the clock on my VCR, but it changes automatically. As for losing an hour's sleep, I'm so sleep-deprived already that I don't even notice!

Correct.
The 17-03-04 or 03-17-04 always gives me a headache! When you're looking something up on the internet and you get a date like 02-12-03 you can never tell whether you're talking about the 2nd of December or the 12th of February! Very irritating.

Rian - why is gollum listed as Vancouver Canada and I'm only listed as New Jersey USA? I want Plainsboro in there, since that is where I live - just like he gets vancouver. Otherwise Gollum should only get British Columbia Canada - just like I am listed as just New Jersey USA. I think that either all towns and cities get eliminated or they go in for everyone that posts their town/city.

Americans always have to do everything their OWN WAY, don't they? bloody stubborn! with your miles and gallons and backwards dates! *grumble* it always used to confuse the heck out of me when i was little because my grandma (Canadian) always insisted on referring to weight in pounds etc... and i used to make fun of her for saying tomAYto instead of tomAHto, so she sang that stupid song... ANYWAY, just a little off topic

I don't like the 'month first' way either. It can be very confusing if you're looking at the best before date on food packaging. The amount of time I've eaten food past it's sell-by date. Especially the food that my sister's friend from America had sent over to us - I kept on forgetting that the dates were different.
But then you Americans, and any other country that uses the month first way, will probably say that the European way is wrong. It's just what you've grown up with that seems right.
